Bringing the "gifts of the forest" home

(BGO) - With special natural conditions, Son Dong district (Bac Giang province) has diverse and high-value sources of indigenous trees and animals. Promoting the advantages, many models of raising specialty plants and animals have been formed, helping to protect precious genetic resources and increase income for local people.

On the weekend, taken by Standing Vice Chairman of the Son Dong district People's Committee Le Duc Thang, we visited the garden of Nguyen Van Vuong (born in 1972), a Tay ethnic in Ga village, Van Son commune.

Gifts of the forest, Bac Giang province, special natural conditions, diverse and high-value sources, precious genetic resources, precious floral species

The district People's Committee is focusing on developing support policies for each model, firstly investing in effective units involving in providing environmental services, growing medicinal herbs and producing organic honey.

According to Vuong, in 2008 and 2009, Chinese traders came to the locality to buy golden flower tea flowers and trees at high prices, so many people went to the forest to dig such trees for selling. Recognising this is a precious floral species, he also went to the forest to find and bring it home to plant with the desire to preserve this precious tree.

After many years of planting and self-propagation, his garden is now home to more than 1,000 golden flower tea trees of different ages, some more than 10 years old and some just propagated and planted at the beginning of the year.

Many models of planting indigenous trees and raising specialty animals in the district have showed positive signals. The model of growing medicinal Indian mulberry of Tay Yen Tu Cooperative is an example. After 4 years of planting and propagating from the wild species in the forest, more than 2 hectares of medicinal Indian mulberry of its members are ready for harvest with an expected revenue of about 600 million VND (26,140 USD) per hectare. Similarly, the goat farm of Hoang Van Than (born in 1981) in Dong Ha village, Yen Dinh commune has also welcomed many visitors and customers.

In order to develop medicinal and indigenous plants with high economic value, in December 2015, the Son Dong district Party Committee issued a thematic resolution on the development of medicinal and indigenous plants. Taking advantage of the natural strengths as well as practical and methodical investment policies, many households have escaped poverty by shifting to growing medicinal plants under the canopy of natural forests in combination with indigenous trees with high economic value, including Erythrophleum fordii, Michelia tonkinensis, white olive, chestnut, and medicinal Indian mulberry...

In particular, traditional crafts such as raising honey bees, making wine and raising specialty animals have proven effective, forming models of agricultural and forestry cooperatives owned by the people themselves. Among typical examples are Thao Moc Linh Agricultural Service Cooperative with Tay Yen Tu honey products and Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative with Son Dong forest honey products, contributing to improving the quality of goods and building prestige and brand.

Despite their development, most of the indigenous tree growing and specialty animal raising models in the district were actively studied and developed by local people so the production scale was small, mainly at household scale. In addition, the linkage from production to consumption among farmers remained limited...

To fix these limitations, the district People's Committee is focusing on developing support policies for each model, firstly investing in effective units involving in providing environmental services, growing medicinal herbs and producing organic honey.

“In order to improve the production of specialty plants and animals, the district is reviewing all models, thereby offering suitable solutions to remove difficulties and effectively tap precious genetic resources being kept by households. Along with support from professional agencies and local authorities, each resident needs to be proactive in production and finding support," said Le Duc Thang.
