Shopping and scanning

(BGO) – Only taking a smartphone with scanning to pay application, customers to Nenh market, Nenh town in Viet Yen district (Bac Giang province) can buy various goods without cash payment. This is the first rural market in the province to realize this payment method, helping bring benefit to both seller and buyer.

Safety and convenience

Nenh market is always hustle and bustle from early morning to late evening to serve shopping demand of dozens thousand workers who are boarding around.

The hustle and bustle Nenh market.

At 6pm on a day in late August, we visited the market to witness the busy shopping atmosphere. Nguyen Thi Thuy, a Lang Son native worker of Dinh Tram industrial park stopped to buy a pair of shoes. After selecting her suitable one worth 170,000 VND (about 7 USD), she used her mobile phone to scan QR code of the shop then pay for the goods in few moments.

The shop owner Nguyen Thi Hai said: “Previously, most of the buyers paid for the commodity in cash so I must prepare cash in various value to return them. Thanks to the support of payment by scanning QR code for nearly one month, I have receive more payment on bank account with absolute accuracy”.

Similarly, the grocery store of 60 year old Nguyen Thi Hau is busy with selling and buying activities. Nguyen The Minh in Hong Thai commune (Viet Yen district) also scanned to pay for a bill of 203,000 VND for some kilograms of black beans and seasonings. The shop owner only needed to show him a board of QR code then check the account balance to ensure the paid amount.

Fear for change

The survey proved that there are dozens of stores applying noncash payment method because both seller and buyer acknowledged the convenience of this transaction way.

Staff at Agribank Viet Yen branch and youth member in Nenh town instruct the trader at Nenh market the payment method via QR code scanning.

Implementing the direction of the district Party Committee, the district Youth Union has cooperated with Viet Yen district branch of Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) to launch the model “Traditional market with noncash payment” in Nenh market as the first model in the province. The small traders and buyers can sell and buy products then pay for them by scanning QR code or transferring the bill cost to the account on E-Mobile banking application with free of charge.

After over one month, more than 30 percent of the store owners in the market have applied this method of payment.

Some still feared of change. Typically, Nguyen Thi Tam, owner of a house utensil shop revealed: “Because I am not good at technology so I only sell product to customer with cash. Sometimes, they want to transfer the bill to buy my product but I do not have bank account”.

At the same time, several traders at middle age had the same thinking because they are afraid of being cheated.

Another reason was the limitation amount for each transaction (at least10,000 VND for each) so this method is not suitable for the low costed goods.

Widespreading

The pilot model of “traditional market with noncash payment” in Viet Yen district helps traders and residents gradually approach modern payment method which will step by step recover the situation of long queuing workers waiting to withdraw cash at ATM on special occasion.

According to Vice Chairman of Viet Yen district People’s Committee Than Van Thuan, the district directed the Youth Union in communes and town to communicate about cashless payment method, mostly in the traditional markets with many workers and stores while striving to establish at least one model at every commune and town.

To grasp the chance of business, the small traders need to change themselves in the cash using habit, study and apply technology in payment. Meanwhile, the service supplier must research and adjust the transaction so as not to restrict current minimum transaction value of 10,000 VND per time to popularize the application.

The benefit of noncash payment is affirmed. Hopefully, this model will be widely spread in Viet Yen district and other wet markets in Bac Giang province.
