Straws made of rice win first prize in an agricultural start-up contest

On October 16, a project on producing straws made of rice and rice noodles, by Truong Thi Hong Ha from Ho Chi Minh City, won the first prize worth 125 million VND in the Agricultural Startup and Innovation Contest, at an award ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Thanks to many years of experience working in the food industry and available production technology from her family, Truong Thi Hong Ha and her husband researched and launched rice straw products OHUGA.

The straws are not only made from a natural material, safe for human health, and environmentally friendly but also 100% biodegradable after use.

Ha has also made products from rice, such as pasta, rice paper, noddles, instant noodles, and coffee stirrers.

At the award ceremony, the organising board also presented two second, three third, and three consolation prizes, worth 65 million VND, 55 million VND, and 30 million VND each, to other outstanding projects.

The contest, the eighth of its kind, is co-organised by the Business Studies and Assistance Centre (BSA), the Vinamit Joint Stock Company, the Foundation of Youth Empowerment (FYe), and the Ca Mau Petroleum Fertilizer Joint Stock Company.

It aims to create opportunities for start-up projects to develop products from indigenous resources, participate in domestic and foreign trade promotion programmes, and raise awareness of standards on good business practices and sustainable development.
