Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Anh Duong presents the second prize to Luc Van Quyet and Hoang Van Khang in the agricultural startup initiative competition.

Khang and Quyet had chances to taste bo khai vegetable in Xuan Luong commune and they were impressed by its flavour. They heard that the vegetable was an offering to kings and it is also used as a valuable herbal plant to treat hepatitis, kidney failure and urinary tract infections. The vegetable costs 30,000 VND (1.3 USD)-35,000 VND(1.5 USD) per kilo and is going like hot cakes. Unplanned exploitation has made the vegetable become rare in nature.

Thanks to the support from the company’s managing board and colleagues, Khang and Quyet have successfully incubated 10,000 bo khai plants. The incubator gardens with a total land of 1.5 hectares are in Yen The, Tan Yen and Luc Nam districts.

Acknowledging economic potentials of the vegetable, they decided to breed some plants in their company’s nursing area. After the trial time, they asked the company’s managing board to allow them to branch out the cultivating model for the vegetable and conduct a scientific research on it.

Khang said they were hit by mass vegetable deaths in the first days of growing the plant due to their inexperience. Learning from initial failures, they decided to use bio-products to treat the root of the vegetable. With clonal propagation method, they chose healthy ones and prepared a mixture of microbiological fertiliser, decomposed manure and forest humus to plant the vegetable.

When the plants took root, the sprouts were planted at their company’s incubator garden. They are grown alternately with oranges, jackfruit trees and other plants which provide large shade so that they are not affected by harsh weather.

Hoang Van Khang (centre) and Luc Van Quyet (left) introduce about bo khai vegetable.

Bo khai vegetable has become a high-value economic plant in some localities like Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan. However, it will bring a new way for mountainous residents to take advantage of the forest land as bo khai can be cultivated under the forest canopy. Each breed bo khai plant can be sold at 4,000 VND (0.18 USD)-6,000 VND (0.26 USD). Easy caring coupled with low investment will help local people increase their income.

The provincial youth union has decided to provide financial support for Khang and Quyet to branch out the bo khai cultivating model. “We will continue to expand bo khai planting area in Yen The, Luc Nam and Tan Yen districts and then connect with cooperatives to provide seedlings for farmers to make the plant a key product in their localities,” Khang said.
