Son Dong expands cultivation area of morinda officinalis

(BGO) - The model of growing purple morinda officinalis in Son Dong district, Bac Giang province helps the people in this high area earn comparatively high income gradually alleviating poverty.  Currently, the local government and people choose morinda officinalis the key plant in the production structure of the district.

Earning some 100 million VND (4,310 USD) per hectare

Son Dong has about 20 hectares of purple morinda officinalis including 3 concentrated cultivation areas in the communes of Yen Dinh, Thanh Luan and Thanh Son town with 15 hectares. The rest growing area is allocated in other communes such as Cam Dan, Que Son, An Lap, Vinh Khuong, Van Son and Tuan Mau.

The officials of the provincial Farmers’ Association visit the model of morindaofficinalis growing of Nguyen Hai Dinh’s family at Thanh Binh village, Thanh Luan commune.

Many households in the district earn some 100 million VND (some 4,310 USD) per crop from this precious medicinal plant. La Van Quang’s family at Dong Chu village, Yen Dinh commune is one of the good examples.

In 2011, he was chosen to take part in the piloting model of growing morinda officinalis under forest trees and fruit trees by the provincial Farmers’ Association. Accordingly, he was provided with nearly 2,000 seedlings and training in caring techniques.

He planted these seedlings in 0.5 hectares of hilly land. Thanks to favourable climate and soil conditions, the plants reached a high survival rate and grew well. 2 years later, Quang harvested the first crop earning 80 million VND (3,450 USD). Hence, he expanded the morinda officinalis growing area to 3 hectares. Seeing his success, many people came to learn experience and buy seedlings to grow. Currently, every household at Dong Chu village owns seedlings of this precious medicinal plant.

After working with a trader from Hai Duong province coming to see the morinda officinalis garden in the harvest season, Quang said, “I’m waiting for a customer paying an acceptable price to sell out to prepare the soil for the new crop. Each tree yields from 3 to 5 kilos of roots and sold at from 150, 000 (6.5 USD) to 180,000 (7.8 USD) per kilo. Each hectare is expected to gain some 100 million VND (4,310 USD)”.

Similarly, Nguyen Hai Dinh’s family at Thanh Binh village, Thanh Luan commune has earned much money thanks to growing morinda officinalis. In 2016, Dinh replaced 1 hectare of ineffective lychee growing area with morinda officinalis. He harvested 4,000 plants in 2018 worth some 100 million VND (some 4,310 USD).

Continuing to expand the model

According to La Van Doan, Vice Chairman of the provincial Farmers’ Association, thanks to favourable soil and climate conditions in the high area of Son Dong, purple morinda officinalis brings big economic value. Thereby, the provincial People’s Committee approved the scientific project “researching to pilot growing morinda officinalis under forest trees and fruit trees in Tay Yen Tu, Son Dong district” by the provincial Farmers’ Associations.

Morinda officinalis growing brings high income to the family of Nguyen Van Long in Non hamlet, Thanh Son town.

Besides, the people’s committee of the district issued the resolution on developing morinda officinalis growing under forest trees and fruit trees. The district strives to expand the growing area of this precious medicinal plant to 30 hectares by 2020.

Up to present, 5 hectares have been expanded under the project of the provincial Farmers’ Association in Thanh Luan commune and Thanh Son town. For further development, the people’s committee of the district regularly organizes training programs on advanced technology transfer to the farmers while changing cultivation purposes on appropriate land area.

Especially, the people in Thanh Luan commune established the purple morinda officinalis cooperative with 17 members where people share experiences in caring, seeding and capital while expanding the growing area to 6 hectares.

Apart from the advantages, purple morinda officinalis of Son Dong faces a number of difficulties such as failing in building trade brand. In order to seek a sustainable market for the product, the people’s committee of the district is collaborating with the provincial Farmers’ Association to establish the Tay Yen Tu purple morinda officinalis Cooperative then building the collective trademark of the product and signing consumption contracts with the traders.

In the coming time, the people’s committee of the district and the provincial Farmers’ Association will continue supporting local people with seedlings to expand the cultivation area. The provincial Farmers’ Association is mobilizing fund to build a nursery of morindaofficinalis at the scale of 25,000 seedlings per crop to ensure the seeding source meeting demands of the people. This nursery is scheduled to come into operation this year.
