Luc Nam enjoys bumper harvest of pineapple with higher selling price

(BGO) – For recent years, the pineapple in Luc Nam district (Bac Giang province) have sharply reduced down to 2 – 3,000 VND per kilogram, causing deep concern to the farmers. This year, they enjoy a bumper season with higher productivity and selling prize. The price at the beginning period fluctuates from 8 – 10,000 VND per kg. 

Happily welcoming ripen fruit season

In late March, when the early pineapples were ripen, the tradesmen from different areas flocked to Bao Son and Tam Di communes (Luc Nam district) to buy the fruits. According to Le Van Ngan, Chairman of Bao Son communal People’s Committee, the local farmers are very happy because this year crop enjoys both productivity and selling price.

In April, the purchasing has slightly decreased due to the Prime Minister’s order of social distancing rule amid the Covid-19 pandemic but it causes few impact on the harvest.

Nguyen Van Tien in Hue Van 2 village, Bao Son commune joyfully shared that this year, he sells the pineapple smoothly with the price of 8 – 10,000 VND per kg at early stage. Now the price goes down a little but he still succeeds to sell the fruits at the orchard for 6 – 7,000 VND per kg.

His family grew more than 2.5 ha with expected output of more than 80 tonnes of fruits, helping him earn an income of over 200 million VND (8,500 USD) excluding the production cost.

Sharing the same happiness with Tien, the local farmers are now quickly harvesting the ripen fruits at main season. The full carriage and smiling face of the farmers prove for a successful pineapple season.

This year, the pineapple brings sweet fruit to the farmers. The Chairman of Famers’ Association in Bao Son commune Duong Ngoc Vuong revealed the pineapple is now a key crop in the commune and several adjacent localities. As calculation, the grower will earn benefit with the selling price of 3,500 VND per kg excluding the cost of variety, fertilizer and man power.

Seeking stable market

Though the growers enjoy good price this year, they still concern about the unstable output market that depending much on the tradesmen.

To facilitate the concentrated pineapple growing area and enhance the product quality toward an easy consumption, the competent agencies in the district have instructed the locals to grow pineapple under VietGAP procedure.

Luc Nam district now has some 400 ha of pineapple, mostly in Bao Son and Tam Di communes with total estimated productivity of 13- 14,000 tonnes of fruits. The district also develops 40 ha of pineapple under VietGAP procedure to sell to major markets of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai and Hanoi.

In 2014, Luc Nam pineapple was recognized by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (Ministry of Science and Technology) as collective commodity brand. The district set up Luc Nam Pineapple Production Cooperative to expand the market and build the trademark.

The VietGAP cultivation area has received the local support in package and label. However, Vu Van Son, Head of the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development said the fruits were sold at fluctuated price few years ago because the growers did not find stable market.

“Thanks to the favourable climate, geology and VietGAP cultivation procedure, ripen Luc Nam pineapple is bright yellow, fruity and sweet that suits to customers’ demand. The most importance now is to build a linkage chain from production to consumption to help the growers comfortably develop this crop for long time. The Division of Agriculture and Rural Development has consulted the measures of trade promotion and linkage to expand its market in the upcoming years as well as encouraged the locals to grow off-season fruits”, Son said.

Bac Giang farm produce store opens in Hanoi
(BGO) – Implementing the instruction of the provincial People’s Committee, the Department of Industry and  Trade on December 1 opened the store to introduce and sell the signature and key farm produce of Bac Giang province in Hanoi as well as promote the orange and pomelo grown under VietGAP procedure with stamp for origin traceability of Luc Ngan district.
