Prospects from precious medicinal plants

(BGO) - Along with the conservation and development of valuable medicinal plants, the project "Applying scientific and technological advances to build models of propagation, planting, collection, preliminary processing and preservation of cat sam and sam cau according to GACP-WHO standards as raw materials for production of ginseng essence and cough syrup in the locality” also contributes to opening up a new direction for locals to develop their economy.

Wake up the wasteland

Not so long ago, the hilly land in Ba Go village, Nghia Phuong commune (Luc Nam district) was covered with weeds. In early 2019, when the Bac Son Forest, Medical and Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company implemented a project to grow cat sam and sam cau (two species of ginseng) and since then, the forest land here has had a new green color.

One of the goals of this project is to help people pay more attention to the development of medicinal plants, and support them in applying techniques in planting, caring, harvesting and processing herbal medicine as a goods to supply raw materials for pharmaceutical production of factories.

Many areas previously vacated have been replaced by precious herbal plants. After more than one year of implementing the project, the whole commune now has more than a dozen hectares of cat sam and sam cau. These plants are growing and developing well.

Not only planting ginseng in Nghia Phuong, in order to expand the area of medicinal plants, the Bac Son Forest, Medical and Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company also grows cat sam and sam cau in Truong Son (Luc Nam district); Tuan Dao commune (Son Dong district); Dong Tam, Hong Ky and Huong Vy communes (Yen The district) with a total area of dozens of hectares.

The company’s actual production shows that one hectare of cat sam can produce 7-8 tonnes of fresh ginseng after a three-year cycle. With an average price of 150,000 VND per kg, it earns an income of over 1.1 billion VND (47,340 USD). Meanwhile, a hectare of sam cau, after a two-year cycle, yields 4 tonnes of fresh ginseng. With a price of 150,000 VND per kg, the company earns 600 million VND, much higher than many other plants on the same area unit.

Planning, expanding ginseng area

According to the evaluation of specialized agencies, the project "Applying scientific and technological advances to build models of propagation, planting, collection, preliminary processing and preservation of cat sam (Millettia speciosa Champ) and sam cau (Curculigo orchioides Gaertn) according to GACP-WHO standards as raw materials for production of ginseng essence and cough syrup in the locality” has been implemented with ensured progress and quality.

In addition to sam cau and cat sam, in order to diversify medicinal plants to create input products for production and business activities, the Bac Son Forest, Medical and Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company also grows many other types of plants such as Ba kich tim (purple medicinal Indian mulberry), kim ngan (honeysuckle), cu mai (Dioscorea hamiltonii), ca gai leo ( Solanum procumbens), kim tien thao (Desmodium styracifolium), and dia lien (Kaempferia galanga L) in some localities across the province.

Many models have proven effective, especially the purple medicinal Indian mulberry model in Nghia Phuong. After a period of four years, one hectare of purple medicinal Indian mulberry produces 15 tonnes. With a market price of 150,000 VND per kg, each hectare of purple medicinal Indian mulberry earns more than 2 billion VND (86,000 USD).

With the advantages of natural geography and abundant human resources, in recent years, some localities in the province have planted many species of medicinal plants such as medicinal Indian mulberry, tra hoa vang (yellow flower tea), dinh lang (Polyscias fruticosa), nhan tran (artemisia), dia lien, Danh mountain ginseng (cat sam), sam cau, and kim tien thao.

In order to effectively tap the potential and expand the area of medicinal plants in the agricultural structure, in the coming time, agencies and sectors need to join hands to support farmers in setting up links with enterprises and scientists to apply advanced techniques in production.

Localities should formulate policies to support farmers in production, trade promotion, and linking with pharmaceutical processing enterprises to ensure sale of their products ... These not only contribute to protecting forest ecology sustainably but also preserve and develop genetic resources of rare and valuable medicinal plants with high economic efficiency.
