Lingzhi mushroom cultivation in Son Dong: Taking advantage of forest

BGO - After nearly 2 years of implementing the project "Applying science and technology in developing Lingzhi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst) cultivation and development models in Son Dong district (Bac Giang province)", the Hanoi-based Mushroom Research and Development Center has yielded positive results.

As a person dedicated to the cultivation of Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst, Be Van Sau, Director of the Son Dong Mushroom Cultivation Cooperative, started growing Lingzhi mushroom in 2013. In 2019, when the project was launched, his family was supported to expand production scale to 10,000 bags of Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst per year, of which 5,000 bags were planted in tents, and the rest under natural forest canopy.

Participating in the project, apart from receiving support in seeds and other materials, his family is also assisted in selling all the products. “Growing Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst is relatively difficult, so few households join the project. Growers need to understand the growth and development cycle of the fungus, and clean the tents regularly to eliminate pathogens”, said Sau.

Realizing the effectiveness of the model, in 2020, the professional unit continued to support the household of Sau and Nguyen Van Long’s family in Roc Nay village, Cam Dan commune to grow 4,000 bags of Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst in tents and 2,500 bags under the ironwood forest canopy. According to the assessment, the mushrooms, which are grown directly under the natural forest canopy, grow and develop well, with less care and longer harvest time. The survival rate reaches about 86 percent. They are harvested after about one month.

Each tonne of raw materials produce about 21kg of dried mushrooms, with an average selling price ranging from 700,000 VND to 1 million VND (30.5-43.5 USD) per kg. After deducting production costs, growers earn 300,000 VND to 400,000 VND (13-17 USD) per kg in profit.

Project Manager Pham Thi Thu said: “The polisacharide content of cultivated Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst is about 1.42 percent, equivalent to that of the natural mushrooms. Therefore, it is completely possible to cultivate this kind of mushroom in the tents. The project will purchase products of the models for pilot production of tea and wine from Ganoderma lucidum Leyss. ex Fr. Karst.
