(BGO) – It is main harvest season for custard apple in the concentrated cultivation area in Bac Giang province, mostly in the communes of Huyen Son, Nghia Phuong and Dong Phu (Luc Nam district). Adding to the traditional fruit, two special custard apples have lured customers with high quality and selling price.
They are Malaysian originated purple custard apple and Thailand custard apple grown in Huyen Son and Nghia Phuong communes.
The purple custard apples have good looking and sweet taste.
According to Phuong Minh Hien in Lien Khuyen village, Huyen Son commune, he asked for the seeds of purple custard apple from his friends in 2019 then piloted to grow 150 seedlings. His family is one of three first households to grow this variety in Huyen Son.
This year is the first harvest season of the purple custard apple which is purple in color, smaller than the traditional fruits (about 6 fruits per kg) with signature flavour and sweet taste.
“Though the first year productivity is 25 percent lower, the purple custard apple is sold at 1.5 time higher price than normal variety, about 65,000 – 70,000 VND per kg. Many customers called me to place orders but I fail to supply all,” Hien said.
After two years, Thailand custard apple tree bears sweet fruits.
Besides, the farmers in Ky Son village, Nghia Phuong commune and traders surprised at big Thailand custard apples (0.5 – 0.8kg per fruit) on local area which is sold at 70,000 VND per kg, nearly doubling that of traditional fruit.
Thailand and Malaysian purple custard apples are two new varieties piloted in Bac Giang under strict monitoring of the competent agencies with potential advantages.
