Building traceability system for Luc Ngan oranges

(BGO) - This year, 10 orange-growing households in Dong Quyt village, Tan Moc commune (Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province) are supported to implement a model of growing oranges up to VietGAP standards and build a traceability system.

Nguyen Van Mau's family in Dong Quyt village has been growing oranges for more than 10 years on an area of 4 hectares. This year, when supported to deploy the model, he registered to plant 2 hectares of yellow-flesh oranges according to VietGAP standards.

Participating in the model, he is helped with 70 percent of microbiological fertilizers from the district's budget as well as traceability stamps, and boxes containing products from the budget of the provincial Department of Science and Technology.

VietGAP-standard oranges have beautiful appearance, uniform fruits, and high quality. In particular, the shift from traditional farming to VietGAP-standard cultivation and the use of biological fertilizers and pesticides have helped improve the environment and ensure safety for growers and consumers.

Implementing the model, Mau has strictly followed the caring process. All stages are noted in the e-diary in the traceability system. Now his oranges are ready for harvest, with an expected productivity of 25 tonnes per ha, up 20 percent compared to before.

The VietGap-standard orange production group in Dong Quyt village has 10 participating households with 22 hectares of yellow-flesh and sweet oranges. Members regularly share production experience and guide each other to update information on the traceability system.

According to the iCheck Vietnam Joint Stock Company - the unit implementing the model, initially, the households’ updating of information on the e-diary was limited and not regular but now they have performed it well. The company is printing traceability stamps and boxes to prepare for harvesting.

"With the traceability stamps, the products will be promoted on e-commerce sites, opening up opportunities for them to be consumed in supermarkets and clean food chains. At that time, the value and brand of Luc Ngan oranges will be known by more people," said Nguyen Huu Tuan, head of the VietGAP-standard orange production group in Dong Quyt village.

Currently, many agricultural products in the province have been labelled with traceability stamps such as Luc Nam custard-apple, Luc Ngan lychee, Luong Phong grapefruit and Hoang Luong celery, among others. The development of a traceability system is one of the solutions for local agricultural products to enter high-end markets.
