Bac Giang expands flower growing area with high value

(BGO) – In post Covid-19 pandemic, the farmers in Bac Giang province have boldly expanded the flower growing area with high value varieties in this winter season. To make it flower on lunar Tet holiday, the competent agencies regularly instruct local farmers to apply various cultivation measures.

Many high quality flowers

Quyen Huyen Agriculture Service Cooperative in Bao Dai commune, Luc Nam district spends an area for flower. Worrying about the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, last year the cooperative only grew two hectares of flower, 70 percent of which were gladioli, eustoma and gerbera.

On harvest season, high market demand made the price go up. The traders directly bought the flower at the field, helping the cooperative earn big benefit of over 200 million VND (over 8,000 USD).

This year, the cooperative decided to grow more flower which will be harvested from the 15th day of lunar December till lunar January.

“Growing flower brings 5-to-7-fold higher income than growing potato,” said Nguyen Van Quyen, Director of Quyen Huyen Agriculture Service Cooperative.

According to the Division of Plant Production and Protection (DPPP) (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), local farmers grow more than 630 hectares of different flowers in this year winter crop (up nearly 200 hectares against last year). Thanks to stable disease control, the households and cooperative increased the cultivation area by new varieties with high value.

Last year, nearly 40 households in Trung Nghia village, Nghia Trung commune (Viet Yen district) grew flower on 8.6 hectares. This year, this figure seems to double. Or family of Nguyen Van Phan in Dai Giap village, Dai Lam commune (Lang Giang district) expanded the area to grow foreign gladioli.

Spreading the crop, reducing consumption pressure

The prolong dried weather this year leads to higher cost of watering and caring for the flower. Pham Thi Oanh in Trung Nghia village, Nghia Trung commune said: “I actively grow flowers in different periods on total area of 1.8 mau (old measuring unit, each equal to 3,600 square meters) but sometime I have to sell the product at low price. Hopefully, my flower can be sold at higher and more stable price on upcoming holiday”.

It is more than two months to come Lunar New Year holiday or Tet. Because such crop depends much on the weather, the growers in localities have closely monitored the situation to have suitable caring method. Noticeably, many farmers and cooperatives have actively found partners to link and ensure a smooth output for the product.

Typically, all eustoma of Quyen Huyen Agriculture Service Cooperative have been ordered by several wholesalers and agencies in Bac Giang city and Hanoi city. Similarly, partner also placed order for all foreign flowers of Nguyen Van Phan.

Vice Head of DPPP Tran Van Tu shared: “To have a successful flower season on Tet holiday, the competent staff at the DPPP regularly present at the fields to give timely instruction to each variety and suggest farmers to divide each flowering period, actively link to the distributors and wholesalers”.
