Green billion-dong fields

(BGO) – These days, everywhere in all rural areas across the province, you can see rows of corn, potatoes, vegetables, oranges and pomelos. With diligence, creativity, application of scientific and technical advances, transfer of crop structures and production linkages of businesses, cooperatives and households, there are more and more effective agricultural production models earning billions of dong in revenue per crop in Bac Giang province.

Actively supporting and linking production

Going along the dyke of the Cau River to Hiep Hoa district, passing the communes of Bac Ly, Mai Trung, and Quang Minh, then to Hoang Thanh and Ngoc Son, everywhere we see vast corn fields.

Duong Thanh Tung, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, visits the Danh Mountain ginseng production area of the Duc Hanh Danh Mountain Ginseng Cooperative.

Nguyen Thi Huong in Phu Coc village, Quang Minh commune said "Thanks to mastering intensive farming techniques, the yield of sweet corn is estimated at 600kg per sao (360sq.m). With an average selling price of 10,000 VND per kg, growers earn more than 4 million VND (170.6 USD) in profit per sao,” Huong said.

According to Ngo Van Han, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Minh commune, in previous years, when sweet corn was not yet put into intensive farming, tens of hectares of land in the commune were almost not used during the winter crop.

In order to encourage people not to give up their fields, the communal People's Committee has supported farmers to buy corn seed for 50,000-80,000 VND per sao. It has also directed the villages to sow seeds about one week apart to lengthen the time for selling products. Thanks to the support and right direction, Quang Minh commune grows 20 hectares of sweet corn each year on average, earning more than 3 billion VND (127,975 USD).

Arriving in Tan Yen, we see the membrane houses of Huyen Trang Hi-tech Agriculture Cooperative stands out amid the field of Lang Dong village, Ngoc Ly commune, surrounded by fields of potatoes and vegetables of all kinds. Giap Van Nhan, head of the cooperative, said in addition to production in the membrane houses, last winter crop, the cooperative planted 20 hectares of Atlantic potatoes, earning a profit of more than 1.5 billion VND (63,987 USD).

From this result, this winter crop, the cooperative expanded its area to 40 hectares and piloted the planting of one hectare of sugar beet and one hectare of flowers of all kinds to serve the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday. According to Nhan, sugar beet has high economic value, with a yield of about 65 tons per hectare, revenue of more than 600 million VND and profit of about 300 million VND after only three months.

In recent years, Son Dong district has also attracted many businesses to cooperate in investing in the production of processed agricultural products. In An Lac commune, for several years, households have been provided by Tan Nong Production and Trading Joint Stock Company with seeds, techniques and fertilizers to produce Atlantic potatoes and sell all products. Currently, the potato yield of An Lac commune is 900-1,200kg per sao, the highest in the province, helping locals earn a profit of at least 80 million VND per hectare. This year, the commune planted 70 hectares, an increase of 20 hectares over last year.

Putting crops of high economic value into intensive farming

In addition to boosting production linkages to stabilize markets for products, the province has paid attention to the synchronous implementation of agricultural restructuring solutions, creating positive changes in productivity, quality and efficiency. The crop structure is shifting towards increasing crops of high economic value. Although the area of some crops decreases, the output still increases thanks to the application of technical advances and production under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

To encourage people to stick to the fields, in addition to the provincial support under production schemes and projects, many localities have issued additional support mechanisms. Typically, Tan Yen district has supported regions where land is accumulated; encouraged people to participate in concentrated production on an area of five hectares or more, and provided farmers with 2-3 million VND per hectare to produce processed agricultural products.

In addition, the district has invited a number of enterprises such as: G.O.C Food Processing and Export Joint Stock Company and Global Food Import and Export Joint Stock Company, to join the production and sale of products.

Along with traditional crops like lychee, orange, pomelo, custard apple, longan, guava, corn and potato, many businesses, cooperatives and people have boldly invested in growing a number of plants of high economic value, with income of a few hundreds to billions of dong per hectare, including Bo Chinh ginseng, Danh Mountain ginseng and golden breast milk.

On average, the province's total annual cultivated area reaches more than 153,000 hectares, of which over 22,000 hectares are for winter crops. Total agricultural output in 2022 reached about 1.6 million tons, with production value per unit area of agricultural land estimated at 138 million VND per hectare per year, 3 million VND higher than in 2021. In the province, there are more and more billion-dong fields, opening up a new direction of intensive farming, thus bringing benefits to people, businesses and cooperatives.
