Vietnamese movie wins prize at Busan International Film Festival

Vietnamese movie “Rom” on October 12 won the “New Current” prize at the 24th International Busan Film Festival (BIFF) which is being held in the Republic of Korea.

The film tells the story about street and homeless children who sell lottery tickets to make ends meet in the buzzing metropolitan Ho Chi Minh City.

The main character tries to raise money to find out where his parents are, who abandoned him when he was a child.

Director Tran Thanh Huy spent seven years to finish the movie, originated from his short film which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.

A movie titled “Haifa Street” by director Mohanad Hayal on the life in Baghdad capital city of Iraq after destroyed by the war also won the same prize. Each film will receive a bonus of 30,000 USD.

As many as 299 movies of 85 countries and territories were sent to the film festival, which is scheduled to wrap up on October 12 night.

This year also saw the largest number of Vietnam’s movies vying for awards at the BIFF, one of the largest film festivals in Asia.

Vietnamese movies win prizes at Swiss film festival
Vietnamese film makers have won a number of prizes at a European film festival. Culi Never Cries, the debut drama by Pham Ngoc Lan, won two prizes in the Open Doors section of Locarno Film Festival held in Locarno, Switzerland.
 
Short films about Hanoi to be screened on CNN
Fifteen short films about Hanoi will be broadcasted on the US’s Cable News Network (CNN) to promote the Vietnamese capital, according to Hanoi Tourism Department.
 
21st Vietnam Film Festival to take place in late November
The 21st Vietnam Film Festival will be held from November 23 -27 in Vung Tau city, the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, announced representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the provincial People’s Committees, and relevant authorities after a meeting on July 15.
 
Vietnamese movie honoured at Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival
Vietnamese movie Nguoi Vo Ba (The Third Wife) won the Special Mention prize at the Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival, which took place in Thailand from July 3-8.
 
Actress joins jury of New York Asian film fest 2019
Actress and producer Ngo Thanh Van has been selected to be a judge at the New York Asian Film Festival 2019 (NYAFF), which takes place in New York from June 28 to July 14.
