Vietnamese buildings win international architecture honors

Two buildings in Hanoi designed by Studio VDGA and VTN Architects have won the Dezeen awards.

Studio VDGA won the award in the business building of the year category for its Star Engineer factory and administrative building, Dezeen, a British online architecture, interiors and design magazine announced this month.

Dezeen said the building explores the rustic and discreet material palette aligning the client's requirements with the site context.

"Business buildings often have a worn-out approach but this project is creating an environment rather than just creating a box for people to work in," the judges said.

They also loved the sense of domesticity incorporated in a corporate setting, which is beneficial and innovative through layering, transparency and openness.

The award in the civic building of the year category went to the Viettel Academy designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects.

The building consists of 12 blocks, ranging from two to five stories high, and is surrounded by green spaces and lakes. According to the judges, the project is "incredibly experiential, and architecturally very clever and well-calibrated".

They also said that the "simply great architecture" had its juxtaposition of circulation, courtyard and building well articulated.

The Stepping Park House designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects did not win any awards but was a 'highly commended' building in the urban house of the year category.

The house in Ho Chi Minh City has a large diagonal void through all three floors and tropical trees in the common areas to create an indoor forest, strengthening the connection with its surroundings.

The projects were chosen from 53 nominees in 10 categories for the annual awards.

This year’s winners were reviewed by 25 leading international architects and will be named overall architecture project of the year at a ceremony in London on October 30.
