The complex of Yen Tu Monuments and Landscapes is comprised of more than 70 relic sites from four clusters of special national historical relics including the Yen Tu historical relic and landscape area (Uong Bi city of Quang Ninh province), the Tran Dynasty historical relic area (Dong Trieu town of Quang Ninh), the Tay (Western) Yen Tu relic and landscape area (Bac Giang), and the Con Son - Kiep Bac complex (Hai Duong).

These sites boast harmonious combination of natural landscapes and architectural structures with special values. Besides, the complex holds great historical significance as it is the birthplace of Truc Lam - the Vietnamese Zen Buddhism founded by King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong. It was also associated with the formation and development of the Tran Dynasty (1225 - 1400) and created the typical religious and cultural space of Truc Lam Zen Sect.

In late January 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam assigned the People’s Committee of Quang Ninh to coordinate with its counterparts of Bac Giang and Hai Duong and related agencies to compile a dossier seeking the UNESCO-recognised world heritage status for the “Complex of Yen Tu Monuments and Landscape” under the regulation of the World Heritage Convention in 1972 and the law on cultural heritage.

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism worked with the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO to build the dossier to submit the UNESCO for recognizing the “Complex of Yen Tu Monuments and Landscape” as the world heritage.

In coming time, the people’s committee of the 3 provinces of Quang Ninh, Bac Giang and Hai Duong will consider allocating funds for the provincial Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism to conduct archaeological excavations in some relic sites which are not included in the 3 provincial-level scientific projects in 2021 to supplement scientific basis, factual evidences and artifacts and clarify contents, characteristics and values of the relic sites for research and completion of the scientific dossier of Yen Tu complex.
