(BGO) – On May 23, more than 1.3 million voters in Bac Giang province voted to choose people with talent and virtue as deputies of the 15th National Assembly and the People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure. With their proactiveness and high sense of responsibility, localities held the elections safely and lawfully in a special context.

At 6:00 am on May 23, the constituencies in Viet Yen district, which is being heavily affected by Covid-19, opened the elections the earliest in the province. After the opening ceremony, members of election teams in protective clothing carried ballot boxes to the concentrated quarantine areas and families in areas under medical monitoring.

According to the provincial Election Committee, by 9pm on May 23, the percentage of voters going to the polls to elect deputies to the 15th National Assembly and the People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure reached 98.2 percent. Districts with a high turnout rate include Son Dong (99.9 percent), Lang Giang (99.7 percent), Tan Yen (98.7 percent), Luc Ngan (98 percent), and Yen Dung (97.7 percent). As many as 1,226 out of 1,948 polling stations saw all voters casting their ballots, accounting for 62.9 percent; while 51 out of 209 commune-level units witnessed all voters going to the polls, reaching 24.4 percent.

In other localities, before the opening time, the grassroots-level loudspeakers broadcast notices for people to vote on time while implementing measures to ensure safety amid the pandemic.

In Bac Giang city, voters of wards and communes went to the culture houses to elect deputies to the 15th National Assembly and the People's Councils at all levels according to the time frames that had been announced previously to ensure distancing. For F2 cases, members of the election teams brought ballot boxes to their homes.

Along with voters in the province, officers and soldiers of armed forces units also enthusiastically participated in the elections. As of nearly 9am, voters who are officers and soldiers of the provincial Military Command, Division 3 (Military Region 1), and Air Defense Division 365... completed their voting.

Carefully preparing conditions for the elections

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, as of May 23, 135 villages and residential areas in the province had been under lockdown and medical monitoring; 28 communes, wards and townships, and 17 villages and residential areas under social distancing. Four districts were placed under social quarantine while Bac Giang city was under social distancing.

The province had more than 1.3 million voters, including more than 1,300 armed force officers, medical staff and volunteers. The number of voters who are F1 cases under concentrated quarantine was over 11,400; while more than 51,800 voters were F2 cases under home quarantine. This was a difficulty and challenge for the election work at grassroots level.

Therefore, before the elections, the preparation of conditions, especially those to ensure pandemic prevention and control, was paid special attention by election committees at all levels, with detailed scenarios developed. The provincial Election Committee promptly printed 160,000 additional ballots and added more than 2,300 "voted" seals.

The units actively added secondary ballot boxes to bring to the quarantined areas and families, as well as medical equipment and supplies to serve the epidemic prevention work at polling stations. Thanks to that proactiveness, the organization of the elections in localities, especially the "epicenter" of Viet Yen and areas under social distancing and quarantine met the requirements.

According to Vu Manh Hung, Director of the provincial Department of Home Affairs and Vice Chairman of the provincial Election Committee, thanks to actively preparing scenarios, the elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and the People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure in the province took place in a safe, democratic, thrifty and lawful manner, with pandemic prevention and control guaranteed.
