Sharing with the community

At 4 am on December 4, a bus carrying members of the provincial police youth union reached Deo Gia commune (Luc Ngan district), one of the 50 most disadvantaged communes in Bac Giang. The route to Deo Gia seems to be farther due to pot-holes. After arriving at the cultural house of Thung hamlet, the young police officers promptly removed photos, doors and window frames, and then painted the house’s walls. Nearly two hours later, the house was tidied up and covered with yellow color.

This was part of the volunteer programme, under which the provincial police youth union has teamed up with youth unions of police forces in Luc Ngan district, the association of drivers in Bac Giang and SUDO Paint Vietnam JSC’s subsidy in Bac Giang. They roofed an entertainment area of Thung hamlet kindergarten, presented water containers to Xa Nho hamlet kindergarten and popularised laws among local people. The programme was implemented with a sum of more than 40 million VND (1,700 USD) contributed by the province’s young police officers and SUDO.

Local youth unions strive to present 1,000 blankets and 5,000 Tet gift packages to poor households and teenagers in difficult circumstances; 500 bus tickets to students to return home for Tet; five houses of gratitude and donate 1,500 blood units. They plan to provide free health check-ups for about 4,500 people.

Over 41 percent of households in Deo Gia are poor. As one of the households with extreme difficulties, the couple 54-year-old Bang Van Dang and 49-year-old Hoang Thi Gia in Cong Luoc hamlet could not hide their happiness when receiving a sum of money from the Binh An Yoga Club in Bac Giang city to rebuild their house, which has been downgraded. Dang has suffered from mental illness. Therefore, his wife, Gia has had to work hard to cover their daily life and their children’s tuition fees.

“I would like to thank the donors. I will borrow more money from my relatives, together with 15 million VND (660 USD) presented by the donors, to build a new house,” Gia said.

On this occasion, the provincial Association of Young Doctors also provided free health check-ups for more than 200 old people, guided local people to wash hands with soap and equipped 500 teachers, parents and pupils of Deo Gia Elementary School with first aid skills. Many old people came early to wait for their turns.

Connecting volunteers

The volunteer programme will go on until February 2018 with the theme “I love my fatherland,” aiming to bring a warm winter and a happy spring to disadvantaged people, support farmers and protect public health. The provincial Youth Union has instructed its chapters to present necessities, scholarships, bikes, bus tickets, Tet gifts, Chung cakes and candy to local students, workers and patients. In particular, there will be activities to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with young workers and students who are unable to go home for the holiday. The volunteers have also guided local farmers how to protect crops and livestock during the winter. At the same time, they have assisted local people to repair roads, dredge canals and clean up the environment.

According to Nguyen Huu Thong, Permanent Vice President of the Bac Giang Youth Union, to make the programme effective, the youth union’s chapters have stepped up on-the-spot volunteer activities and addressed emerging issues in residential areas. The provincial Youth Union has directed and brought together clubs, groups and teams via social networks to carry out volunteer activities. Initiatives and addresses of needy people have been raised thanks to the connection. Local youth unions have devised contents and tasks weekly and monthly in order to maximise social resources and build up trust among donors and businesses.
