In her opening speech, Ma Thi Thin Nga, Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society, emphasized that thanks to the direction of the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, the Party committees and authorities at all levels, Bac Giang has always stood in the top of the northern provinces in the voluntary blood donation movement and is one of the few localities in the country to organize response festivals in all districts and city.

Voluntary blood donation has become a meaningful movement which has spread widely among the strata of people.

Every year, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation encourages its chapters at all levels to organize many meaningful programmes and festivals such as: the Red Spring Festival; The day for all people to voluntary donate blood; The summer campaign for red blood drops; and the Red Journey, adding thousands of blood units to serve the emergency and treatment of patients.

In 2018, Bac Giang received nearly 20,000 units of blood, with 1.17 percent of the population participating in blood donation, higher than the national average. In the first 5 months of this year, more than 8,000 units of blood were donated, reaching 51 percent of the year plan.

Typical districts are Luc Ngan (1,751 units) and Luc Nam (1,093 units). The blood was transferred to the standby blood banks at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Vietnam-Germany Hospital, and the provincial General Hospital.

A drop of blood is given, a life is saved

Responding to the World Blood Donor Day (June 14), the honouring ceremony is held annually by the provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation to praise achievements and honour outstanding collectives, individuals and families in blood donation. So far, 4,500 blood donors have been honoured.

At this year’s ceremony, 119 typical donors honoured come from many localities, agencies, schools and businesses. Every drop of blood they give comes from a compassionate heart, contributing to bringing life to many people.

The family of Nguyen Dinh Quyet in Phu Thinh village, Lang Son commune (Yen Dung district) now leads the province with 37 blood donations.

Quyet said: “When I first donated blood more than 10 years ago, it was inevitable that I felt anxious and nervous. But now, I consider blood donation a routine health check. Moreover, no deed is more meaningful than sharing blood drops from our body to save others' lives”.

From that mindset, he persuaded his wife, two sons and many other relatives to donate blood.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Gia Tien, Chief of the Office of the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, stressed that in June, ceremonies are held across the country to honour outstanding blood donors. This is a festival of compassionate hearts that are ready to share the blood of love.

Since February 2008 (when the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation was established), the country has received nearly 12 million blood units, with the following year’s result always higher than that of the previous year. Bac Giang province has made a significant contribution to that achievement.

To make the role models continue to be a source of encouragement for other healthy people to participate in blood donation, he hoped that the Steering Committees for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels would actively coordinate with medical units and schools to effectively mobilize people’s blood donation.

Agencies, units, socio-political organizations should actively encourage officials, civil servants, employees, youth union and trade union members to participate in the movement, thus continuing to promote the "mutual affection" tradition of the nation.
