Helping national contributors improve housing

(BGO) - Along with the full and timely implementation of preferential policies, agencies at all levels, sectors and localities have been mobilizing many resources to improve housing for people who rendered service to the nation in Bac Giang province.

Joy of settling down

In the past days, the gratitude house of the family of Bui Minh Tan (born in 1946) in Thi Cung hamlet, Tam Tien commune (Yen The district) welcomed many relatives and neighbours who came to share his joy. Currently, Tan receives allowances for being both war invalid and sick soldier.

A leader of Tam Tien commune (Yen The district) hands over the gratitude house to war invalid and sick soldier Bui Minh Tan.

Of a total of over 100 million VND (4,300 USD) spent to build the house, 50 million VND was donated by the Saigon Tobacco Company Limited. To have a full joy, on the house inauguration day, the local authorities and mass organizations also presented many household utensils, helping Tan's family stabilise their life.

For many years, from the humanitarian fund mobilized by organizations, businesses and individuals, the provincial Red Cross Society has supported the construction of gratitude houses for policy beneficiary families on the occasion of the War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27).

This year, the association assisted three households of people who contributed to the revolution in districts of Luc Nam, Luc Ngan and Tan Yen with 20 million VND (860 USD) per household. Of these, Duong Thi Thoi (born in1958) in Muoi village, Lan Mau commune (Luc Nam district) has the most difficult circumstance. As a former youth volunteer, she now lives alone and often gets sick. In addition to the money sponsored by the Red Cross, the provincial and district associations of former youth volunteers and the local authorities also donated money and workdays.

Mobilizing many resources

Currently, the provincial Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is managing about 160,000 dossiers of national contributors, including 21,000 martyrs; 22,000 invalids and sick soldiers; and over 1,300 heroic Vietnamese mothers. The rest are people who joined resistance wars and Agent Orange (AO) victims.

Getting support to build the house under Decision 22 of the Prime Minister, the family of Than Van Dan (born in 1943) in Bay village, Tang Tien commune (Viet Yen district) has stabilized their life.

Currently, the whole province has more than 28,000 people who rendered service to the nation and their relatives receiving monthly allowances. Among policy beneficiary families, many are facing special difficulties, especially in housing, and they need support.

Implementing Decision 22/2013 of QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on housing support for people who contributed to the revolution, the province has more than 2,700 households in need of new and repaired houses approved.

The state budget provided more than 86 billion VND (3.7 million USD) while the provincial budget more than 4.5 billion VND (193,000 USD). Up to now, households have started house construction and repair. Some districts such as Hiep Hoa, Lang Giang, Luc Ngan and Son Dong have completed the work.

Many localities and mass organizations have had creative ways to express their gratitude to national contributors. For example, in Tang Tien commune (Viet Yen district), for many years, in addition to building a fund of gratitude, the commune also established a board to raise funds for improving houses for policy beneficiary families. At the same time, communal leaders have directly persuaded businesses based in the area to support this meaningful activity.

In Hiep Hoa district, every year, the district Women's Union launches a peak campaign to encourage its members to contribute to a fund that supports people who rendered service to the nation in repairing and building houses. It directs and assigns officials and members at grassroots level to donate workdays to help policy beneficiary families complete their works.

In order to improve the effectiveness of supporting people who rendered service to the nation to improve housing, in the coming time, agencies at all levels, sectors and localities will further promote popularisation and disseminate the purpose and meaning of the "gratitude- paying" activity so that it will spread to everyone and every home.

In particular, they will call for social support and integrate resources to support policy beneficiary families with difficulties in settling down and improving their lives.
