Bac Giang women send love to the frontier

(BGO) - Responding to the programme "Accompanying frontier women" launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union, since 2018, the Women's Union of Bac Giang province has given support to members of the Women's Union of Tu Mich commune, Loc Binh district (the northern border province of Lang Son). The programme has brought about practical results.

Diversifying support activities

For many years, the life of Nong Thi Che, a 60-year-old Tay ethnic minority in Gieng village, Tu Mich commune and her son affected by Agent Orange/dioxin was full of difficulties. Their house was in danger of collapsing because it was too old. After a survey in early 2019, the Bac Giang provincial Women's Union made a dossier and raised funds to support the construction of a house for her family.

All taken photos and information were sent to the women’s unions of districts, Bac Giang city, the provincial Police Agency and the provincial Military Command. Shortly thereafter, officials and members of the women’s unions in the whole province enthusiastically responded to the call.

Each official of the women’s unions of the province, districts, Bac Giang city and units voluntarily donated a one-day salary to raise funds for the programme "Accompanying frontier women".

From the raised money, the provincial Women’s Union presented 20 million VND to Ché's family. To celebrate the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday in 2020, Che and her son lived in a new 50sq.m house with iron roofs and a closed toilet.

Cung Thi Lien (born in 1979) from the Tay ethnic group in Luong village (the same commune) is also one of many members who receive support from the Bac Giang provincial Women's Union. Her husband died a few years ago in a traffic accident, and she had to take care of her children by herself. In 2018, she was supported half of the sum needed to build a hygienic toilet by the provincial Women's Union.

In addition, officials of the provincial Women’s Union guided other women’s union members in Tu Mich commune how to implement the model of "building a family with no poverty, no legal violations and social misbehaviours, no domestic violence, no third child, and no malnourished and off-school children, as well as clean house, clean kitchen and clean alley".

Not only providing timely support and assistance for many members, the provincial Women's Union has also coordinated with the Chi Ma Border Gate Guard Station in organizing activities to educate the tradition of firmly safeguarding the border of the Fatherland. At present, the station has more than 20 officers and soldiers (or one third) who are from Bac Giang province.

Head of the station Ninh Hong Thang said: “Every time they went to the border, they brought along gifts from their hometown such as Ke pancakes, Chu noodles or dried lychee to our officers and soldiers. The material value is not large, but it is the way to encourage us to feel secure in our work, thus firmly protecting the border. ”

Towards the frontier

Implementing the cooperation plan between the Vietnam Women's Union Central Committee and the Border Guard Command on the organization of the programme "Accompanying frontier women" in the 2018-2020 period, the provincial Women's Union has developed a specific scheme to materialize this programme in Tu Mich commune.

The scheme started with a chain of communication activities to disseminate the support programme among over 300,000 members and women across the province on and encourage women to text BC to 1409. The province has mobilised 46,900 messages to support border women.

Over the past three years, the provincial Women's Union has persuaded women in the whole province to provide funding to build 93 charity houses and hygienic toilets for the families of poor members in the locality. It has offered hundreds of Tet gifts, blankets, and warm jackets for poor children and member women.

The provincial Women's Union has called on all associations at the grassroots level to encourage officials and members to donate textbooks, notebooks, pens and school supplies. In particular, the provincial Women's Union awarded a bookcase including hundreds of books, magazines and a computer set to the Women's Union of Tu Mich commune.

Nguyen Thi Lien, Chairwoman of the provincial Women's Union, said: “2020 is the third year that the union has carried out the programme, thereby expressing the affection and responsibility of people in the plain region to those in the frontier of the country. The value is not great but through this activity, the relationship betwen the Women's Union of Bac Giang and Lang Son provinces and the Chi Ma Border Gate Guard Station has become closer and closer, contributing to encouraging soldiers and people in the border areas feel secure in working to keep peace for the nation".

Tu Mich commune has basically met the new-style rural building criteria, and it is expected that in September, it will fulfil all new-style rural building targets. This is the joy of not only the local Party committee and authorities but also the rear - officials and members of the Bac Giang provincial Women’s Union.
