Bac Giang's health sector prepared to respond to new level of pandemic

(BGO) - In recent days, Vietnam has continuously confirmed new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the community, causing difficulties for the prevention and control of epidemic spread. To deal with possible situations, these days, hospitals and health centers in Bac Giang province have prepared plans to receive Covid-19 patients.

The main hospital "on duty"

On this occasion, people coming in and out of the provincial General Hospital number from 2,500 to 3,000 a day. To oversee these people, the hospital opens Gate 1 for patients to go in and Gate 2 on Le Loi street for those to go out.

Before check-up, people have to wear masks, be disinfected and have their temperatures taken. Health staff classify patients with suspected signs to take them to a separate room for screening to prevent cross-contamination.

Nguyen Van Dong, Director of the hospital, said that this time the hospital restricts inpatient treatment in accordance with the development of the disease, thus increasing the effectiveness of treatment to shorten patients’ hospital stay. Hospital beds are arranged 2m apart and cleaning staff are requested to constantly clean the rooms and disinfect door handles, stairs and toilets.

On the morning of April 7, the Department of Infectious Diseases provided quarantine and treatment for three suspected. Although they had negative test results, they were still under supervision.

Recently, the hospital received 23 patients transferred from Hanoi-based Bach Mai Hospital. Determining that they are not only patients with serious illnesses but also high-risk sources of transmitting the coronavirus from the country’s largest hotbed to Bac Giang, the hospital has let each person be quarantined and treated in a room. All of them had specimens taken for SARS-CoV-2 testing.

At this time, the hospital has arranged a quarantine area of 30 beds for suspected people and 50 separate beds for SARS-CoV-2 patients. The Department of Microbiology has the testing capacity to detect those who are positive for SARS-CoV-2, effectively serving the hospital’s patient classification for quarantine and treatment.

Along with calling for health workers’ readiness to be on duty, the hospital has focused on guiding its staff on the latest method issued by the Ministry of Health in diagnosing, treating and caring coronavirus-infected people, ensuring safety when receiving patients.

Preparing all conditions

Together with the provincial General Hospital, the provincial Department of Health has directed medical centers in districts to receive and treat Covid-19 patients, and quarantine those suspected of catching the virus. All units have been proactive in screening patients, controlling infection and arranging separate treatment areas for suspected cases and Covid-19 patients, with a total of 260 beds.

At the Tan Yen district Health Center, to prevent the disease from entering the facility, its departments and offices have strengthened the infection control in professional practice. Especially, waste collected from quarantine rooms are treated in line with a standard process.

The Luc Ngan district Health Center has arranged 50 beds in the last house which is isolated from the departments, with separate paths for those with suspected symptoms and Covid-19 patients. The Department of Infectious Diseases and another department in the centre have jointly appointed four teams of 12 doctors and 15 nurses to be on duty around the clock to promptly screen and receive patients.

At the Bac Giang Women’s and Children Hospital, the Examination Department welcomes 500-600 people per day. Amid the risk of Covid-19 entering the hospital whose targets are pregnant women and children, the hospital has arranged two separate examination areas to serve normal persons and those with signs of cough, fever and shortness of breath.

The provincial Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control has established the 200-bed field hospital No. 1 at the provincial Endocrinology Hospital. In the case of widespread infection, the second field hospital will be put into operation at the provincial gymnasium.

According to the provincial Steering Committee, Bac Giang has to date allocated nearly 198.5 billion VND (8.45 million USD) for epidemic prevention and control. On this occasion, hospitals and health centers in the province have actively procured chemicals and medical supplies at a higher level.

During the week, the provincial General Hospital bought five more ventilators for its quarantine area. The Son Dong district Health Center purchased an ambulance for the transportation of patients. The provincial Center for Disease Control has installed a sample extraction system for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing to increase its capacity by four times (currently 200 samples per day), serving quick screening and detection of infected people.
