Bac Giang city supports households facing difficulties due to Covid-19

(BGO) - Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, many households in Bac Giang City are facing difficulties. Along with the monthly support for poor and near-poor households, on this occasion, the municipal Party Committee and authorities are mobilizing the community to join hands to help those with unexpected difficulties to stabilize their lives.

"A stitch in time saves nine"

The situation of the family of Nguyen Van Thien, 73, in Hoa Son residential area, Da Mai ward is very difficult. He works as a bicycle and motorbike repairer, with unstable income. His wife is mentally ill and receives a monthly allowance of more than 500,000 VND (21 USD).

The Fatherland Front Commitee and Youth Union of Hoang Van Thu ward coordinate with philanthropists to raise funds to support people in difficult circumstances.

For several months, due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak, he had to quit his job so their life was more difficult. Giving the fact that the disease is affecting many families, from the support of the community, the city has supported all local poor and near-poor households with 500,000 VND each. Particularly, 32 households in especially difficult circumstances, including Thien's family, were given 500,000 VND and 10kg of rice.

Last week, the Youth Union of Hoang Van Thu ward coordinated with Petrolimex Joint Stock Insurance Company (PJICO) and a number of philanthropists to donate food and necessities to poor households.

During two days at the Le Loi - Nguyen Van Cu crossroads, near the provincial General Hospital, young people received donations, divided and packed gifts to present to the disadvantaged. More than 500 gift packages, including rice, noodles, fish sauce, and soup powder, were distributed to the poor and disadvantaged patients.

Responding the call of the Fatherland Front and mass organizations, a number of units and businesses such as Bach Viet Group Joint Stock Company, National Citizen Bank (NCB)’s Bac Giang branch and benefactors also handed over hundreds of gifts to poor and disadvantaged people.

The management board of the Aqua Park Bac Giang Apartment Building on Nguyen Van Cu street organized a "zero dong" supermarket, distributing rice, noodles and daily necessities to disadvantaged households everyday. This activity is expected to continue until the end of the epidemic.

Capturing difficulties, providing timely support

For many years, the municipal People's Committee has provided rice for poor households with 10kg per month per person; rice and 500,000 VND per month per person for poor students to help them cover learning expenses. 

In every between-crop period, communes and wards provide food for local households. At the same time, they also give support in production capital and renovation of houses to help poor families ease difficulties.

However, this time, the Covid-19 pandemic is affecting many people in the area. The municipal Party Committee and People's Committee have directed wards and communes to review difficult cases, especially freelance workers, street vendors and small businesses who has suspended work to actively assist them in stabilising their lives.

Following the directions, many wards and communes have promptly taken measures to support people affected by the epidemic. In early March, Tran Nguyen Han ward provided between-crop support for poor and near-poor households with 20kg of rice each. On this occasion, the ward continues to support each poor household with 3 million VND per month and nearly poor family with 1.5 million VND per month for three months (from April to June).

Many wards such as Tran Phu, Le Loi and Tho Xuong have provided rice, noodles and basic necessities to poor and near-poor households and those facing unexpected difficulties, while directing the residential groups to continue reviewing disadvantaged cases for timely support.

Tho Xuong ward has just handed over 2.2 tonnes of rice to 77 households, mostly disabled people, lonely old people, lottery ticket sellers and hired workers.

Nguyen Thi Hong Vinh, Chairwoman of the Dinh Ke ward People's Committee, said the disease has greatly affected households. On this occasion, the ward used funds from the community support to provide necessities for 172 poor and near-poor households and those in difficult circumstances, with 500,000 VND and 10kg of rice each; 90 households whose members are under home medical quarantine, with 10kg of rice each. The ward continues to review cases of difficult circumstances and base on the real situation to give further support.
