As if hesitating, it would be late

Behind every drop of blood donated and every blood unit transmitted are moving stories. I met Captain Nguyen Quang Toan, deputy chief of the police unit of Quang Minh commune (Viet Yen district), former staff of the Technical Division, on a weekend morning.

Sadly, he said that “My son had leukemia and died in 2017 when he was under 5. For two years, I and my family had taken care of him at the Department of Pediatrics under the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. More than anyone else, I understand the situation and aspiration of families with their beloved in need of blood as well as how urgent a patient needs blood”.

Officers and policemen of the provincial Public Security Department voluntarily donate blood.

On June 6, 2019, when doctors of the provincial General Hospital informed that someone needed a blood transfusion, he and Lieutenant Colonel Phung The Son, deputy head of the Internal Political Security Division, former Secretary of the Youth Union of the provincial Public Security Department (who also had a child died of blood cancer and has donated blood more than a dozen times) immediately went to the hospital to donate blood and platelets to the patient. Their drops of red blood have helped extend life for others.

Particularly in 2019, 11 officers and policemen donated platelets to save patients in critical condition. After only a few minutes from receiving the information, they were present at the hospital as if hesitating, it would be too late.

Full of motivation

Le Thi Duyen, Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society, deputy head of the Standing Board of the provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation assessed that the provincial Public Security Department is a unit with a tradition of donating blood for many years. Not only youth union members but also many officers, commanders and division-level leaders also actively donate blood, creating a beautiful image and spreading the blood donation movement in the community”.

The unit boasts a large force of nearly 1,000 youth union members from professional divisions and teams. With a concentrated working evironment and regular physical training, the police officers in the province have enough conditions to donate blood.

In order to encourage officers and policemen, just after the blood donation activity was launched in 2005, the provincial Public Security Department established a Steering Committee for voluntary blood donation and has policies to encourage and reward blood donors in a timely and right manner.
