The survey, which sought to see which public figures Vietnamese people look up to, placed Vietnam’s first billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, chairman of the nation’s largest private conglomerate Vingroup, second behind Gates.

Other notable Vietnamese men in the list are television presenter Tran Thanh in fourth place, and Party Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong in fifth.

World leaders have a strong presence in the top ten listing for men and women.

Among the men, former U.S. President Barack Obama is in third place, current President Donald Trump in sixth and Russian President Vladimir Putin in seventh. Alibaba co-founder and tech entrepreneur Jack Ma is in eighth place, Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo in ninth and the Dalai Lama tenth.

Among the women, Vietnamese diva My Tam, hailed the "Queen of V-Pop," is followed by other local entertainers. Singer Phi Nhung comes in fourth, model Ngoc Trinh in eighth and actress Tang Thanh Ha in ninth. National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan ends up in fifth place.

International women doing well in the list are Queen Elizabeth II (second), former First Lady of the U.S. Michelle Obama (sixth) and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in seventh.

American singer Taylor Swift comes in third and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie in tenth place.

YouGov gathered open-ended nominations from panelists across 42 countries and territories between January and March, asking them: "Thinking about people alive in the world today, which [man or woman] do you most admire?"

The nominations were then used to compile a list of the top 20 men and 20 women who received the most nominations and were nominated in at least four countries. An additional 5-10 popular local figures were added to the lists for individual countries.

Because the first wave of fieldwork was carried out before the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, some figures associated with leading national efforts to counter the disease did not make it on to the national admiration lists, said YouGov.

In fieldwork conducted from May to September, the list was used to poll each of the 42 areas asking two questions: "Who do you truly admire?" where respondents could make multiple selections, and "Who do you most admire?" for which only one answer could be picked.

Globally, the Obama couple are the most admired man and woman.
