Accompanying workers to overcome difficulties

(BGO) - The Covid-19 outbreak in Bac Giang province has attacked businesses in industrial parks (IZs), affecting workers' health, employment and income. Promoting the role of protecting and taking care of members, trade unions at all levels in the province have gathered all resources to promptly support tens of thousands of workers to overcome difficulties.

Ensuring welfare for trade union members

During the recent Covid-19 outbreak, Bac Giang became the epicenter of the whole country with more than 5,000 cases, mainly found in industrial parks. While coordinating with agencies and sectors at all levels in epidemic prevention and control, the provincial Confederation of Labour has urgently directed trade unions at all levels to proactively grasp the situation and promptly support members and employees.

With their funds and donations by organizations, businesses and individuals, trade unions at all levels have spent more than 28.8 billion VND or 1.25 million USD (including cash and goods) on medical supplies and necessities for people in treatment facilities and areas under lockdown and social distancing and workers.

The provincial Confederation of Labour also decided to support trade union members infected with Covid-19 with 2 million VND (86.7 USD) per person and F1 cases with 500,000 VND (21.5 USD) per person. Up to now, more than 6,600 trade union members have been supported with a total amount of nearly 7.5 billion VND (325,300 USD).

The statistics of the organization showed that more than 225,400 workers in the province had to leave their jobs due to medical quarantine, treatment or being in locked down areas. Among them, tens of thousands lived in boarding houses with difficulties.

With the motto "do not let trade union members and workers lack essentials", the Confederation established an emergency relief team who is ready to assist workers in the epicentre. Since its establishment on May 10, it has provided necessities worth about 650 million VND (28,196 USD) for over 3,600 labourers.

Both production and pandemic prevention

By June 28, according to the plan on safe production amid the pandemic, the whole province had 188 enterprises allowed to resume operations with more than 35,000 workers. The provincial Confederation of Labour has directed and guided trade union officials at grassroots level in more than 600 enterprises with trade unions to strengthen their role in supervising and supporting employers to ensure the conditions for epidemic prevention when production is resumed.

As one of the first enterprises approved to reopen, New Wing Interconnect Technology Co., Ltd in the Van Trung Industrial Park currently has over 1,600 workers working in workshops.

Tran Kim Chi, President of the company's Trade Union, said that in order to pick up and organize life and work for workers at the factory to ensure pandemic prevention and control, the trade union advised company leaders to establish a Covid-19 safety team including 20 members who are mainly leaders of trade union groups and staff of the personnel and health departments. Every day, the team guides and reminds workers to strictly follow epidemic prevention measures at work and beyond working hours...

Right after the plan of restoring production, Samkwang Vina Co., Ltd in the Quang Chau Industrial Park, which had recorded many Covid-19 infections, was determined to build a safe production model. Since it welcomed the first 100 workers back on June 8, the company has gradually maintained stable production with hundreds of workers.

Nguyen Van Canh, Chairman of the provincial Confederation of Labor, said that in most of the enterprises that have resumed production, the grassroots-level trade unions have proposed the establishment of Covid-19 safety teams. In addition to ensuring safe conditions amid the epidemic, such teams develop scenarios to cope with unexpected situations, thereby helping employees feel more secure when entering work shifts and join efforts by their companies and trade unions to implement pandemic prevention measures.

In addition, the Confederation continues to call on organizations, businesses and benefactors to donate money and goods to support workers who have not returned to work, helping them overcome this hard time.
