Two more metro trains to arrive in HCMC next week

The sixth and seventh trains for HCMC's first metro line will reach the city July 13 from Japan, ready for a trial run.

The two trains with three cars each left a port in Japan for Ho Chi Minh City two days earlier, project investor HCMC Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) said Wednesday.

A car of HCMC's metro line No.1 is put onto the T1 track at the Long Binh Depot in HCMC, June, 2021.

After a voyage of nine days, they will arrive at the Khanh Hoi Port in HCMC’s District 4 before being transferred to the Long Binh Depot in Thu Duc City on July 15 and 19.

Each train is 21 meters long, four meters wide, three meters high and weighs 37 tons.

The 19.7-km metro route No.1 from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien theme park in Thu Duc City will have 17 Japanese-made trains in total.

Each train will have a capacity of 930 passengers and travel at up to 110 kph above ground and 80 kph underground.

Five trains were delivered between October last year and June this year.

The project investor said it expects to start the trial run for the line in the fourth quarter.

Work on the much-delayed line, which began in 2012, is more than 86 percent complete, officials have said.

The city had hoped to begin commercial operations by the end of this year, but the Covid-19 outbreak has delayed it further.

HCMC plans to build eight metro lines running a total of 220 kilometers.
