HCMC coronavirus tally in new wave crosses 12,000

Vietnam recorded 606 new local Covid-19 cases Sunday morning, including 443 in HCMC, pushing the coronavirus tally in the southern metropolis to 12,058.

46 other cases were recorded in Tien Giang, 43 in Vinh Long, 39 in Binh Duong, nine in Hau Giang, seven each in Ben Tre and An Giang, four in Phu Yen, three in Bac Ninh, two in Binh Phuoc and one each in Ca Mau, Quang Nam and Bac Lieu provinces.

In HCMC, 285 cases have been contained within quarantine zones and locked down areas, and the remaining 158 are being contact traced. On Saturday, the city recorded 1,300 cases, its highest number in a day since the disease broke out.

All new cases in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang are related to the outbreak at a company in Go Cong Town and had already been isolated.

In the nearby Vinh Long Province, 36 new patients were detected in quarantine facilities and isolated zones and the remaining seven are associated to the cluster in HCMC's Binh Dien wholesale market, which has suspended operation.

In Binh Duong Province that borders HCMC, 35 new cases were in close contacts with confirmed patients and four are linked to the cluster at HCMC's Thu Duc wholesale market which has been shut down as a pandemic prevention measure.

In the Mekong Delta's Hau Giang Province, four cases returned from HCMC and the remaining five had already been quaratined following contact tracing.

In the delta's Ben Tre Province, five patients had close contact with confirmed patients and the remaining two are linked to the cluster at HCMC's Binh Dien market.

Among the new cases in An Giang, another Mekong Delta province, five were detected in quaratine facilities and the remaining two returned from Dong Thap Province and HCMC. An Giang Province entered a 15-day social distancing campaign from Sunday, banning gatherings of 20 people or more in one place and of 10 people or more outside workplaces, schools and hospitals.

The new cases in Phu Yen, Bac Ninh, Binh Phuoc and Ca Mau had already been quaratined.

The new case in Quang Nam, the first in the central province after 20 days without community transmission, is a 49-year-old man who had traveled to Hanoi and HCMC.

The new case in the Mekong Delta's Bac Lieu Province had returned from HCMC and been quaratined.

Since April 27 when the new wave hit Vietnam, 24,932 infections have been recorded in 58 of the nation's 63 cities and provinces, with HCMC accounting for the most cases.

Vietnam records 423 new domestic Covid patients
The local Covid-19 tally of Vietnam's ongoing wave was raised by 423 Friday morning to 21,289, with Ho Chi Minh City recording the most.
