The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) presented 1,600 cold boxes for vaccine preservation as well as temperature monitoring equipment worth a total of JPY100 million (US$877,000) to the Vietnam National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) on November 12.

Cold boxes marked RCW 25, manufactured by B Medical Systems will be used to transport vaccines from central cold storage to vaccination points nationwide. The cold box is linked with a temperature control device to ensure that the vaccines are always stored at the ideal temperature of 2C-8C.

“Vietnam has so far administered 96 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines and is currently implementing a vaccination campaign on a national scale. The Japanese government has also provided Vietnam with more than 4 million doses of vaccines. The donated cold boxes will be used to safely transport vaccines at the central, provincial and district levels. On behalf of the Ministry of Health and the NIHE, I would like to express my sincere thanks to our Japanese friends,” said Prof. Dr. Dang Duc Anh, NIHE Director.

Chief Representative of the JICA Vietnam Office Shimizu Akira said that “Vaccination activities have been widely conducted in big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. We hope these cold boxes will help in the implementation of the vaccination programme in all localities in the near future.”

JICA has also coordinated with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to implement the project “Strengthening capacity to prevent and control the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam’s border provinces” since July 2021.

Through the project, JICA will help Vietnam train and improve the capacity of border gate officers in five provinces that share a border with Laos and Cambodia, including Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Tay Ninh, An Giang and Dong Thap, while providing them with personal protective equipment and the necessary equipment to disinfect their hands. The total value of the support package is about JPY20 million (US$175,000).
