Accelerating vaccine coverage, proactively and effectively preventing pandemic

(BGO) - Determining vaccination against Covid-19 as one of the important solutions to flexibly adapt, effectively and safely respond to the pandemic, Bac Giang province has focused on implementing vaccination drives for the people and continues to accelerate vaccine  coverage among the elderly and those with underlying diseases. Bac Giang Newspaper interviewed Tu Quoc Hieu, Director of the provincial Department of Health, on this content.

Could you tell us about the results of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign in the province so far?

As of December 13, the province had administered more than 2.3 million doses of vaccines. Of which, 99.4 percent of people aged 18 and over received the first shot and 73 percent got full two shots. In particular, 96.4 percent of those aged 50 years or older with underlying medical conditions received the first dose and 95 percent were fully vaccinated.

Despite achieving positive results, the province still has about 7,000 people who have not received the first dose. These are mainly people under treatment, using drugs, showing contraindications to Covid-19 vaccines and having history of anaphylaxis to vaccines at level 2 or higher. Some cases with temporary vaccination delay include women having pregnancy under 13 weeks and people who have recovered from Covid-19 for less than 6 months, alongside some elderly people with underlying medical conditions.

So, how is the injection of booster shot (third dose) for targeted groups in the province?

Currently, the districts and city in the province have been administering the booster shot of Covid-19 vaccine, targeting people aged 18 years or older who have got the 2nd dose for 6 months or more. Priority is given to frontline forces participating in epidemic prevention and control, people at high risk and those living in epidemic-hit areas, urban areas and regions with high population density, and workers at industrial parks.

A large number of Covid-19 cases will lead to health system overload, affecting the treatment, even of other common diseases. Therefore, even though people have been vaccinated, they still need to strictly follow the 5K recommendation of the Health Ministry, especially wearing masks and avoiding mass gatherings

Tu Quoc Hieu, Director of the provincial Department of Health.

Up to now, nearly 10,000 people working in the frontlines of the pandemic fight have been given the booster shot.

When the rate of people aged 18 years and older getting the first jab reaches 99.4 percent at present, why is the province still determined to administer vaccines for the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions?

For the elderly (over 60 years old), the aging process weakens the functions of their organs, including the immune system, thus reducing their ability to fight against diseases. Therefore, those with underlying diseases have a higher risk of severe progression when contracting Covid-19, resulting in a higher mortality rate than that among healthy young people.

Therefore, elderly people with underlying diseases need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 even more. The health sector recommends that these cases need a booster shot (28 days after the second dose) to ensure health. In addition, because the immune system weakens, elderly people and those with underlying medical conditions rarely have severe reactions when receiving vaccines.

In the coming time, what solutions will be taken by the health sector to speed up the Covid-19 vaccine coverage, especially for the elderly with underlying medical conditions?

In order to speed up the progress of vaccine coverage, in the immediate future, localities must regularly review and count people who have not been vaccinated. At the same time, agencies and mass organizations should enhance communications to encourage people to get the vaccine when eligible.

Particularly for the group of elderly people with underlying diseases who face difficulties in travelling, besides organizing the vaccination at health stations in wards, communes and townships, the health sector will arrange injection points in cultural houses of villages and residential areas to facilitate inoculation for residents. For those who cannot move, it can arrange vehicles and human resources to inoculate them at home.

Thank you very much!
