According to Vu Thi Kim Tan, Chairwoman of the communal women’s union, Huong Son was the first locality in the district defecting infected cases; thus the officials were very stressed with sleepless nights. In line with the food and necessities support from the district’s organizations and unions and neighbouring localities, the commune promoted the self-help spirit and mobilized on-site facilities and human resources.

The women’s union collaborated with the Red Cross Society and other unions to cook three meals per day for people in the concentrated isolation areas and the frontline forces. In the high peak when the pandemic penetrated the schools, the commune set up three kitchens in three different areas including the headquarter of the communal people’s committee, the cultural house of Don 19 village and house of one member in Huong Than village with nearly 500 sets per each meal.

Besides, new pandemic outbreaks in the communes of An Ha and Tan Thanh and Voi town in November 2021 brought many students and teachers into concentrated quarantine. Members of the women’s union had to put aside their housework to support cooking for isolation areas regardless of weather. The sense of solidarity, humanity and sharing of the women in difficulties gave more strength and motivation to win the pandemic.

The power of solidarity

The pandemic occurred right at the vegetable harvest time in Ca and Dong 2 residential neighbourhoods, Kep town. Traders could not get into the lockdown areas to purchase products while local people in medical home-quarantine could not go to the fields for harvesting.

The union donated necessities, cash, medical facemasks and antiseptic solutions worth some 1.5 billion VND (65,217 USD) and collaborated with the local organizations to maintain 41 kitchens with involvement of more than 4,000 participants to provide hundred thousands of meal sets to people in concentrated quarantine and the pandemic fighters in 2021.

Chu Thi Thanh Van, Chairwoman of the women’s union of Kep town could not sit still to see the farmers’ assets at risk of loss after a long time of hard work, she called her friends and internet community to seek consumption market.

Within 21 days, the women in the lockdown areas in turn went to harvest vegetable and melon to gather at the checkpoints. At the checkpoints, the women from outside and functional forces received the veggies to transfer on “Zero VND trucks” (free transportation) to bring the products to different localities for consumption. After only 2 weeks, more than 20 tonnes of veggies and fruits of different kinds were released from the fields to get to consumers.

One year passed with numerous difficulties but many emotional stories have been written amidst the pandemic. Although they were not relatives even had never met each other, when the pandemic occurred, people treated each other like family members who readily gave support regardless of time, weather or danger.
