Largest national-scale blood donation festival launched in Hanoi

The National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) launched the 15th edition of the annual Xuan Hong (Red Spring) Festival – the largest national-scale blood donation event, in Hanoi on February 12.

Taking place until February 20 at five venues in Hanoi, this year’s event aims to collect 7,000 units of blood and 1,000 units of separated platelets.

Addressing the launch ceremony, NIHBT Director Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh said that in the past, blood supply for medical use at hospitals in Hanoi and localities often faced a serious shortage after Tet (Lunar New Year) festival, which is the country’s biggest and longest holiday.

Given the situation, Xuan Hong Festival was first launched in spring 2008 and quickly received enthusiastic participation from blood donors.

Over its 14 editions, the festival has collected nearly 92,000 units from hundreds of thousands of blood donors. Notably, during this year’s nine-day Tet festival, the NIHBT received 905 units of whole blood and 5,745 units of platelets.

The festival has not only contributed to addressing the shortage of blood for treatment but also helped to raise public awareness of the purpose and significance of blood donation.

Within the ceremony, Meta, the owner of social media network Facebook, in coordination with the NIHBT introduced a new feature to make it easier for people in Vietnam to sign up as donors and to connect people and organisations with the blood donations they need, right from Facebook. This feature will become operational on February 16.

On the occasion, the Vietnam Red Cross Society presented certificates of merit to five collectives and 15 individuals who have made outstanding achievements in the organisation and implementation of the Red Spring Festival over the past 15 years.
