Bac Giang association serves as bridge to help disadvantaged children

(BGO) - Bac Giang has thousands of disadvantaged children. With the desire to give the best to children, over the past time, the Association for Protection of Children's Rights in Bac Giang province has connected with organizations and individuals at home and abroad for more resources to help them go to school and make their life less difficult.

Kind hearts

According to the provincial Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the province has more than 478,000 children (accounting for about 28 percent of the population). They include over 40,000 from poor and near-poor households, 3,000 children with disabilities and about 600 orphans.

Duong Thi Loi, Chairwoman of the provincial Association for Protection of Children’s Rights, and leaders of Hiep Hoa district’s Youth Union present gifts to disadvantaged children.

In late December 2021, representatives of the association visited and gave gifts to disadvantaged children in Son Dong district. During this trip, the delegation witnessed the family situation of Tran Thao Vy (born in 2011) and Tran Vy Tinh (born in 2012), in Lanh village, Le Vien commune.

The house the two children lived with their father degraded, posing a risk of unsafety in stormy days, especially when their father is away. Their mother left when they were small, their father was in poor health, with an unstable job. The two children and their father had to temporarily stay in the old house of their grandparents.

In order to help them have a safe home, the association persuaded Le Thi May, an overseas Vietnamese living in the US, who is currently the General Director of Evergreen Bac Giang Sustainable Development and Investment Joint Stock Company, to cover the entire construction cost of 90 million VND (3,880 USD).

This is the third house that has been built with financial sources mobilized by the association to support disadvantaged children since 2019. The two previous houses were delivered to children in Vinh An commune and An Chau township of Son Dong district.

Warm human love

Duong Thi Loi, Chairwoman of the association said that in order to have resources to care for and protect children, the association has mobilized the participation of authorities at all levels, sectors and communities in developing funds.

Whenever hearing information about disadvantaged children in need of support, the association has sent staff to the site to verify through the local authorities to find a support plan that suits their family's wishes. Through its website, the association has called on domestic and foreign organizations and individuals to help needy children.

With that approach, the association has established regular cooperation programmes with more than 100 organizations and individuals, including Thien Tam Fund of Vingroup and the Charity Fund for Children in Thua Thien Hue, along with many foreign funds. As a result, the association annually ensures sufficient resources to help more children in the province.

A highlight of child care and protection activities is the programme "Giving wings to dreams" initiated by the provincial Association for Protection of Children’s Rights and Bac Giang Newspaper, and implemented since 2016. From 2018, the programme has seen the participation of the provincial Study Promotion Association.

After 6 years of implementation, the association has raised nearly 2.5 billion VND or 107,700 USD (in cash and in kind) from hundreds of agencies, units, businesses, and benefactors. As a result, more than 1,000 disadvantaged children were given scholarships and learning tools to fulfill their dreams of going to school and having a better life and future.

In 2021, although Bac Giang was greatly affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the association coordinated with agencies, units, organizations and individuals to find ways to overcome difficulties in order to maintain support for disadvantaged children. In just one month, more than 6.2 billion VND (267,230 USD) in cash and in kind was mobilised to give gifts to more than 24,000 poor, orphaned and disabled children in the province, of whom about 100 received scholarships to sponsor their study until they have jobs.

Last April, representatives of some families in France came to Bac Giang to visit and sponsor children in Luc Nam district and Bac Giang city. The benefactors said they are very happy when the money sent from France every year has been used by the households for the right purposes.

Party committees and authorities at all levels, together with the provincial Association for Protection of Children's Rights and socio-political organizations, will continue to join hands to speak out and take action so that children can live in a safe environment and develop healthily.
