HCMC to advise 21-day self-quarantine for monkeypox suspects

HCMC may advise foreign entrants suspected of having monkeypox to self-isolate themselves for 21 days, the city’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) said Thursday.

Nguyen Hong Tam, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City CDC, said the 21-day isolation was recommended by the WHO. However, the Ministry of Health is yet to issue any instruction regarding HCMC’s proposal or the WHO recommendation.

An electron microscopic (EM) image shows mature, oval-shaped monkeypox virus particles as well as crescents and spherical particles of immature virions, obtained from a clinical human skin sample associated with the 2003 prairie dog outbreak in this undated image obtained by Reuters on May 18, 2022.

The city had also requested the health ministry Wednesday to require all foreign entrants to submit health declarations upon entry over fears of a potential monkeypox outbreak. Those at high-risk or have potential symptoms would be moved to a separate area for health check and questioning regarding their medical history.

Vietnam has yet to record a monkeypox case, but the health ministry has warned the disease may enter the country as it has already infected people in several of its neighbors.

Monkeypox is now present in around 75 countries and territories, with over 16,000 cases and five deaths. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, skin lesions and rashes. It is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids or lesion material.
