95% laborers return to work in HCMC after Tet holiday

Companies that resumed operations on Friday in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) after the Tet holiday report that 95% of their laborers have returned to work.

A quick survey of 1,361 companies in the city shows that over 42% of them had arranged for employees to go on holiday for the Lunar New Year from January 18 until reopening on January 27.

The remainder of HCMC companies will resume operations on January 30.

Among those that reopened already, 95% of their laborers have returned to work, Nguyen Van Lam, deputy director of the municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said on Friday.

He said this year has been different from previous years, when laborers used to switch to other jobs and other companies right after the Lunar New Year holiday.

He said at the end of 2022, more than a few companies reported a drop in orders and a shortage of raw materials following the global recession, and as a result, they had to downsize and let go of many workers.

Such a situation has affected laborers, most of whom want to have stable jobs, and so they hesitate to make changes.

The city’s labor sector predicted that companies that resumed operations on January 30 or later would see a high ratio of laborers returning to work.
