(BGĐT) - In the early 60s of the last century, thousands of cadres, workers and engineers from all over the country and Chinese experts gathered in the historic land of Xuong Giang, with the determination to successfully build the Ha Bac Nitrogenous Fertilizer Plant - the first of its kind in the country. Among them are engineer, "electricity hero" Le Van Buu from Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh central province.
That day, Vietnam still faced many difficulties with a poor industry, so every province wanted to have industrial parks. After surveying many locations in the North, the team of Chinese experts chose Ve village, Tho Xuong commune, Bac Giang town to build the plant because this place gathered all favorable conditions.

After only one year of hard work, the plant ground was leveled. Three years later, on an area of more than 40 hectares, 96 out of 130 main items of the factory were built, including a thermal power workshop which then became a power plant.
To prepare the basic conditions for the plant’s trial run and official operation, high-skill engineers were needed and Le Van Buu was prominent among them. Buu was born in 1938 in Hien Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province. He graduated from the Hanoi University of Technology in 1963 with an absolute score of 30/30. From his student life, he had many outstanding initiatives that were widely used in reality.
After graduation, Buu worked at the Nam Dinh Power Plant. After a few months, he was told that Ha Bac province was building a nitrogenous plant and wanted to hire him as an electric expert in five months.
He said in early 1965 when the plant construction was being accelerated, the US imperialists expanded the destructive war to the North. The emulation movement "Each person works as much as two" became stronger than ever. On the 35th founding anniversary of the Party (February 3, 1965), Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Nghi, on behalf of the Party and the Government, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the thermal power workshop.
In the process of connecting the first turbine to the national grid, the atmosphere was extremely tense. It went smoothly in the first 30 minutes, but then encountered some problems, which were very dangerous for the Ha Bac electric furnace. The Chinese experts were also tense and worried.
As the main person in charge of electricity-related issues, Buu quickly decided to separate the turbine from the grid. Fortunately, with the cooperation of Chinese experts, the connection of the turbine to the national grid was then successful, and the factory officially started a trial run. Summarizing the emulation movement from 1965 to 1968, Buu was award the title of "Electricity hero" by the Director of the Vietnam Electricity Authority, equivalent to the title “Valiant fighter against the US” in the South at that time.
However, the destructive war of the US imperialists extended the production of the first nitrogenous fertilizer package by 10 years. In order to protect the lives of workers and property of the State, the Government decided to suspend the plant’s production. The thermal power workshop was converted into the Ha Bac Thermal Power Plant, serving economic and defense activities. Buu was appointed head of the Ha Bac power grid regulatory unit, taking the prime responsibility for the electricity of Ha Bac province. He overcame all dangers and hardships during working.

His imprint was also reflected in the anti-flooding works in 1971, the transmission of electricity across the Duong River to promptly prevent flooding in 1972, and provision of water for agricultural and forestry production in 1974 when a turbine of the Cam Son hydropower plant was damaged.
He worked for the nitrogenous fertilizer plant until the end of 1973. In early 1974, the plant was separated to set up Ha Bac’s Electricity Department 7 and Buu worked here until 1998. After retiring, he has lived in Bac Giang city until now.
In his heart, he always considers Ha Bac - Bac Giang as his second home, full of kindness and gratitude. He is proud of the Ha Bac Nitrogenous Fertilizer Plant - the "first child" of the Vietnamese nitrogenous fertilizer industry. It is a famous brand associated with the history of the country and an industrial symbol of Ha Bac province with his contributions.
