Nguyen Thi Oanh, born 1995, has proved her talents by earning the silver medal in the 27th Southeast Asian Games 27 (SEA Games) in 2013. She has regularly held the national first or second place in the 3,000-m hurdle, 1,500-m, 5,000-m and women’s 800-m relay events.

However, this year witnessed strong breakthroughs of the girl from Lang Giang district. She earned six gold and four silver medals in four tournaments. Her achievement becomes more significant as total medals of the province’s athletics team in international and national events in 2016 are only seven golds, seven silvers and two bronzes. It also affirms Nguyen Thi Oanh’s specially important role in the athletics team.

Though she is still young, with her talents and hardworking, Oanh has become a core member of the national athletics team in general and Bac Giang province’s in particular. At the fifth Asian Beach Games – ABG 5 held in the central province of Da Nang in September, she was an official member of the Vietnam team. She gained the position thanks to her efforts to improve capacity during nearly a year of practice and competition. She came in second in the 5,000-m sand marathon, contributing to the Vietnam female team’s gold medal at the Games.

In November 2016, at the national track and field championship, while her teammate Nguyễn Tiến San had an injury, all gold medal hopes were pinned on the little girl. The pressure was high as she had to compete in three categories. As runner Dâm Thì Sau could not participate in the event, thế Bắc Giang women’s team, led by Oanh, won third place in the 4 x 800-m relay. She also shone in two individual categories, surpassing many strong rivals from Hanoi, Hồ Chí Minh City and Army teams to be the champion in the 3,000-m hurdles and women’s 5,000-m events. According to her coach Dương Thị Uyên, Oanh’s running time has been much shortened, particularly in the 3,000-m hurdles. Now is a good time for Oanh to focus on practising to change the colour of her medal from “silver” to “gold” at the SEA Games 29.

Before creating the above breakthroughs, in May 2016, Oanh was a hero at the International Hanoi Open. She earned overwhelming victories in her two out of her three strong suits, the 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres. In addition, she won a silver medal in the 4 x 800m relay. Oanh gained another gold medal at the International HCM City Open in the women’s 5,000m event.

Dao Xuan Hung, Head of the Athletics Division of the provincial Sport Training and Competition Centre, said that the women’s team currently face difficulties as some runners leave the team or have health problems, while the younger runners do not have enough experience yet. Meanwhile, Pham Tien San’s injury needs more time to be completely cured. Therefore, Oanh’s efforts in 2016 are praiseworthy. She does not have the advantage in her body, but her serious, professional attitude in practice and competition as well as her high determination inspire her team to strive for Bac Giang’s best track and field achievements.
