Nghiem Van Y was born in 1999 into a farmer family, with no one pursuing the sports career. His family has two children, his sister and Y. Although they are poor and work hard year-round, his parents still create all the conditions for him to go to school.

But as an opportunity for him to stick to martial arts, in the early years of secondary school, Y got acquainted with and participated in the district’s mass martial arts tournaments. Teachers in charge of physical education and martial arts at the district Culture - Sports Centre discovered his ability and talent so they encouraged Y to practice martial arts. With his passion for long, Y made rapid progress and in 2013 he was recruited to the Hanoi centre for training high-level athletes.

Having lived away from home since childhood with the hard practice of a national athlete, Nghiem Van Y has always made efforts and obtained many achievements at national and regional competitions, with two gold and two silver medals at national level, the title of the first-class master in 2016, a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Wushu Championship in 2017 in the Republic of Korea, and most recently, a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2018 in the men’s sanda 60kg, together with the Vietnamese sport delegation bringing glory to the country.

Y said to prepare for the ASIAD 2018, he and his teammates had practiced hard since the middle of last year. Each day, he had to practice 3-4 times, from 5 am until the late night. During the early days in Indonesia, due to unsuitable climate, the health of Y and many of his teammates were affected. However, with their high determination, Nghiem Van Y and his teammates tried their best to compete, with a view to showing the martial spirit of Vietnam and the strength of Vietnamese people to international friends.

Y shared that after winning all the matches in the qualifying round, he was injured in the semi-finals, so, unfortunately, he could not continue competing.

At present, Y is gradually recovering to prepare for training in China, all for the nearest goal of competing at the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2019.

With good physical strength, agility and ability to parry attacks, martial artist Nghiem Van Y is progressing fast when being trained methodologically and competing in regional competitions to sharpen his skills. With his talent, Y is one of the young and promising young athletes, expected to contribute high achievements to Vietnam’s Wushu on the regional and international arenas.
