F1 Hanoi race may debut in November

The delayed debut of the Vietnam Grand Prix in Hanoi could be in November if safety measures are in place.

A proposal for this will be submitted by the race organizers to the city People’s Committee and the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

Since the Covid-19 pandemic has been controlled in Vietnam, the organizers and the FIA will discuss with city authorities the best time to hold the race.

The F1 Hanoi circuit is under construction in March 2020.

Recently F1 President Chase Carey held discussions with European countries like Austria, England, Spain, Germany, and Netherlands on resuming. The Austrian race could go ahead on July 5 if the government approves. The U.K. is next, with F1 waiting for the government’s approval, and every team entering requiring to be quarantined for 14 days.

F1 Hanoi is expected to be run in mid-November this year and two options are on the table. The first is without spectators and the second is with only Vietnamese spectators. A few months ago over 100,000 foreigners bought tickets for the race along with 40,000 local fans.

Foreign fans will get a refund while locals can use the tickets when the race returns and they will receive updates on the schedule soon.

Hanoi signed a 10-year contract to host the race starting this year, and it could be extended further in the eighth year.

The race was scheduled for April but had to be postponed indefinitely because of the pandemic. Formula One has canceled or postponed 10 races this season.
