SEA Games record holder Nguyen Thi Oanh grew up from hometown playground

(BGO) - From Bac Giang Newspaper Run, many talent young athletes have been detected, nurtured to grow up, including Nguyen Thi Oanh, a record holder of South East Asian Games (SEA Games) who was born in 1995 in My Ha village, Lang Giang district.

Oanh is always number one seed of Lang Giang delegation selected to compete at many seasons of Bac Giang Newspaper Run. To gain high achievement, she has experienced truly hard practising process under the instruction of coach such as building stamina and endurance by running several kilometers for months.

Teacher Nguyen Thanh Vinh who used to teach Physical education at Tien Luc Secondary School (Lang Giang district) and coach Oanh in district athletic team said though she has small shape, Oanh has steel energy to conquer any difficulty and obstacle while exerting every effort to reach the target.

She is proud to anticipate in every season of Bac Giang Newspaper Run because it is the biggest marathon event in the province with the participation of thousands of athletes at various age groups coming from ten districts, city, local organizations and agencies. The event also creates a playground for young athletes to show their talent.

For many consecutive years, Nguyen Thi Oanh has been named at the highest podium for first prize at the competition. Thanks to the professional organization of Bac Giang Newspaper Run , Oanh has gradually affirmed her position to be professional athlete.

In 2010, at the age of 15, Oanh started practising as a professional runner. Due to small feature (weight of less than 40kg and height of 1.5m), Oanh seemed to be rejected from the track and field team by the provincial Sports Training and Competition Center (Center). The serious practising spirit and durable effort helped her win the trust of the training board.

Dao Xuan Hung, the staff in charge of athletics in the Center said though Oanh does not have physical advantage, he has very high responsibility an spirit in practising and competition.

Winning consecutive high achievements at provincial and national tourneys, Oanh was called to national team. In late 2014, she must take temporary leave from running career to focus on treating the illness.

However, she continued bagging many successes at domestic and regional championships right after coming back to the running course, such as gold medal at Asian Games 2018, one gold and one silver at Asian Beach Games 2016 and five individual golds at SEA Games.

Excellently, she protected two gold medals at women’s 1,500 m, 5,000 m run and first ever gold at 3,000 m steeplechase after reaching the finishing line at 10 minutes 02 and breaking the record previously made by Indonesian athlete in SEA Games 26.

“Conquering the set target is not easy. It takes industriousness, effort and persistence every day. So, if you love trace and field, please try your best and fire brightly for your passion,” Oanh shared.
