Bac Giang volunteers join hands toward successful SEA Games 31

(BGO) – Among 77 volunteers selected to serve badminton competition at the upcoming 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) to be held in Bac Giang city (Bac Giang province) from May 16 – 22, many people were assigned by the Organizer to take the most important position of the event.

Acting as SEA Games’ interpreter twice

After knowing about the selection of interpreter serving badminton event at SEA Games 31, English teacher Pham Van Cuong (born in 1984) in Bo Ha High School (Yen The district) registered and was selected.

At the 22nd edition of SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003, he was second year student at Hanoi University of Education and selected to be interpreting volunteer who was in charge of picking up, interpreting for foreign delegations at the competition, training venues, tourism sites in Hanoi city.

It is the second time Cuong has been selected to do this task. He said it is his honor, pride and heavy responsibility. As the Organizer’s assignment, Cuong will assist Singaporean delegation as well as consult and exchange information with others if needed.

Recently, he has actively researched documents about the culture of Southeast Asian countries, especially Singapore as well as provincial signature specialties and cultural identities to promote homeland beauty to international friends.

Desire for contribution

Vu Anh (born in 1997) in Hoang Van Thu ward (Bac Giang city) is really happy to be first ever selected as interpreter at SEA Games 31. After graduating from primary school, he moved to study at Horizon International Bilingual School in Hanoi then the UK’s University of Huddersfield, faculty of Business Management.

Playing the role of Chairman of Students’ Association, Vu Anh regularly held cultural shows and hosted the events in English on special occasion of Lunar New Year holiday, Vietnam Teachers’ Day in front of hundreds of foreign teachers and students so as to promote the image of Vietnamese country and people.

Excellently scoring 8.5 in Speaking Skill at International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Vu Anh is now working at Australian Adventus International Education Organization in Hanoi. He desires to serve and devote to hometown, the young man decided to register to be volunteer at the biggest sport event of the region.

He was selected and assigned to be MC of the programme together with first year student of Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam Vo Nguyen Tra My (born in 2003) in Nghe An province.

For recent weeks, two persons have practiced bilingual agenda in Vietnamese and English under the instruction from official at the provincial Department of Foreign Affairs.

Young and active broadcaster

The twelve grader Do My Dieu Linh (born in 2004) at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted surpassed many candidates to be broadcaster for all badminton matches at the Games. With overall score of 7.5 in IELTS, bronze medal (2021) and silver medal (2022) at Willkommen International Language Competition, Dieu Linh was one of the bright faces among the volunteers.

Do My Dieu Linh.

Linh is now the youngest party member at the Party Committee of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted. With fluent communicative skill, the Chairwoman of English Club at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted often organizes English talk show, exchange event and dialogue at school with various themes so as to widen the foreign language qualification and knowledge.

Recently, Dieu Linh and other volunteers have presented at the provincial Gymnasium to practice and rehearse the programme. Linh’s main task is to interpret all competition contents, participating athletes, score and organizer’s requirement during the event. Moreover, she provides assistance to delegations and athletes if needed.

Linh said it was her great honor and excitement to first ever participate in the regional event. To gain more knowledge, she spends time every day on surfing the internet to search for information about SEA Games’ history, badminton competition rule and national culture.

SEA Games 31 in Vietnam features 40 sports that are competed in Hanoi and 11 neighboring localities. The opening ceremony will be held on May 12 evening at My Dinh National Stadium (Hanoi). Badminton competition takes place in Bac Giang province from May 16 – 22 with 135 athletes from 8 regional countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.
