FIFA rankings: Vietnam retain top position in Southeast Asia

Vietnam have remained Southeast Asia’s number one, standing at number 96 on the latest FIFA men’s rankings, far above the region’s number two Thailand, at number 111.

Vietnam’s 1-0 win in a friendly match against the Philippines and 6-0 win over Laos at the AFF Cup 2022 opener helped Park Hang-seo’s troops earn an additional 1.98 points and secure their 96th position.

With the current position, Vietnam remained in the world’s top 100 for five consecutive years, since 2018. In Asia, Vietnam ranked 17th while Thailand stood at number 21.

Following the World Cup, most Asian powerhouses have improved their rankings, with Japan jumping from 24th to 20th, the Republic of Korea from 28th to 25 and Australia from 38th to 27th.

Argentina clinched the world’s number two from Belgium after winning the World Cup in Qatar, while Brazil stayed top of the world despite elimination in the quarterfinal round.

Morocco, the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals, jumped from 22nd place to 11th.
