Vietnam get easy group for U23 Asian Cup qualifiers

The group draw for the Asian Cup U23 men’s football qualifying round placed Vietnam into a relatively lightweight group with Singapore, Yemen and Guam on Thursday afternoon.

Group C is considered comfortable for Vietnam.

Singapore and Guam have not qualified for the U23 Asian Cup before, while Yemen have not qualified for the last three tournaments. Vietnam, on the other hand, have advanced past the qualifiers in the previous four tournaments, and the team finished in second place during the 2018 edition of the cup.

SEA Games champions Indonesia are also in a somewhat light group with Turkmenistan and Taiwan.

Thailand’s group is also not considered too competitive, with Malaysia, Bangladesh and Philippines. The Thai squad's biggest challenge will be their arch rivals from Malaysia. Neither Bangladesh nor the Philippines have qualified before.

The 2024 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers will take place in September, with 43 teams divided into 11 groups. The top team in each group and the four best second-placed teams will qualify for the main event in Qatar next year.

Vietnam will host all group C qualifying matches.

The main event will take place from April 15 to May 3 next year with 16 teams. The tournament's top three teams will qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
