World's tallest building lights up with Vietnamese flag

The world's tallest building in Dubai lit up with the colors of the Vietnamese flag Wednesday to commemorate Vietnam's National Day.

In a video posted by the official Twitter account of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, UAE, Thursday, an image of a fluttering Vietnamese flag could be seen cover the entire building at night.

"In celebration of Vietnam's 75th Independence Day, #BurjKhalifa lit up in their flag. We wish the people of Vietnam growth and success," the post read. Vietnam's National Day falls on September 2.

A similar video was also posted by the official Twitter account of the UAE Embassy in Vietnam later in the morning.

As of Thursday evening, the video posted by the Burj Khalifa Twitter account had garnered around 2,200 views and 239 likes. Many expressed their happiness with and gratitude for the gesture.

"Thank you, thank Dubai. I love it, I love you," wrote Anh Thu Bui, a Vietnamese.

The Burj Khalifa tower, completed in 2009 and opened in 2010, is currently the tallest building in the world. It has 163 floors and a height of over 829 meters, beating the world's second tallest building, the Shanghai Tower in China, by around 197 meters.

The building often uses lighting displays to commemorate significant events. The projection of national flags, including that of Vietnam, is a ritual performed by the UAE and Dubai authorities to show respect for partners they deem special, according to news website Newsbeezer.

Just a day earlier, the tower also displayed the national flag of Uzbekistan in commemoration of their independence day on September 1.

UAE is considered Vietnam's biggest commercial partner in the Middle East, while Vietnam is seen as the UAE's foremost gateway to access the ASEAN market. The two countries' bilateral trade turnover reached around $6 billion last year, with Vietnam having an export surplus of around $5 million. The two countries aim to increase their bilateral trade turnover to $10 billion in the coming years.
