Cannes film festival winner to teach in Vietnam

Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung, who won the Best Director award at the Cannes film festival this year, will teach an advanced course in directing in HCMC next month.

The class is part of a cinema program in Vietnam called "Gap Go Mua Thu" (Autumn Encounters). Director Phan Dang Di, a representative of the organizers, said Hung would host the class from July 6-12.

Tran Anh Hung (L) receives Best Director award at the Cannes film festival on May 28, 2023.

Hung was supposed to teach last year but couldn’t due to visa issues and the class was moved to this year.

This is the first time Hung has returned to Vietnam after four years. In 2019, he also taught a directing class for "Gap Go Mua Thu."

Hung used films like "The Dreamers", "Rosetta" and "Eyes Wide Shut" as his teaching materials.

Dam Quang Trung, a student in the class this year, said he admired Hung and hoped to meet the director soon.

"Meeting director Tran Anh Hung will help me strengthen my spirit and love for cinema," Trung said.

Hung, 61, moved to France in 1975. He studied at the prestigious university Ecole Louis-Lumiere.

His work "The Scent of Green Papaya" won the Camera d’Or at the 1993 Cannes and received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

On May 28, Hung won Best Director at Cannes for "The Pot au Feu."

In a press conference after Cannes, he said the most difficult part of being a director was finding the right story.

"Gap Go Mua Thu" was held for the first time in 2013 in support of young talented filmmakers.

There are 14 young filmmakers taking part in the class this year. Of which, there are five Vietnamese and the rest are from Cambodia, Thailand, China, and France.
