Hiep Hoa sets example in promoting initiatives at school

(BGO) - Not only being one of the top localities with high educational quality in Bac Giang province, in recent years, Hiep Hoa district has become a bright spot in the emulation movement to promote scientific and technological initiatives among students through contests.

Enthusiastically responding to the movement

Since 2016, the school has annually had 4 to 5 excellent products selected to compete in the Innovation Contest for Youth and Teenagers at the district level, and most of which won prizes.

Notably, at the provincial-level contest held in July 2019, many products won high prizes, such as the model "Smart fire warning and fighting robot" of Nguyen Xuan Tu and Nguyen Hai Duong (second prize). The robot has intelligent features such as checking environmental parameters and automatically turning on the on-the-spot nozzle. Hiep Hoa district has 27 secondary schools and 32 elementary schools with more than 35,000 students. In recent years, the scientific and technological innovation movement has been taking place vibrantly, attracting a large number of students to participate in.

Annually, based on the guidance of the Organizing Committee of the contests at all levels, the district People's Committee has assigned the Education and Training Division to coordinate with the district Youth Union and relevant agencies in organizing the district-level contest. It has issued instructions and rules, devised criteria for schools to follow, set up a jury and selected products for the provincial-level competition.

Encouraging creativity

Nguyen Van Thao, deputy head of the Education and Training Division of Hiep Hoa district, said to encourage students, the unit proposed the district reward authors and guiding teachers with winning products. The rewards of the district are worth between 400,000 VND and 800,000 VND while those of the division are from 160,000 VND to 300,000 VND, higher than rewards for excellent students, plus a certificate of merit.

Guiding teachers will receive emulation points when they are classified at the end of the year. Many schools commend winning students in front of the flag and present money to them to stimulate their passion for creativity in science and technology.

The Thang Township Secondary School has also provided money for students to buy materials and assigned experienced teachers to provide consultations for and help students; set up a board to give comments on products before they are sent to the contests at district, provincial and national levels. "Teachers must inspire and transmit their passion to students so that they are passionate about research," said teacher Nguyen Van Hung, Vice Rector of the school.

Over the past three years, at the provincial competitions, many Hiep Hoa students have been honoured. For example, the software "Testing intelligence" by Nguyen The Van and Duong Quang Thanh (the Thang Township Secondary School) won the first prize; the "Robot supporting care for patients in the hospital and the elderly in the family" by Nguyen Xuan Tu, Nguyen Luong Chinh and Nguyen Minh Quan (the Hoang Van Secondary School) won the third prize at the provincial-level contest and the consolidation prize at the national contest; and the "Smart speaker system" by Bui Minh Duc (the Danh Thang Secondary School) won the third prize.

Recently, the software "Designing an online supermarket chain providing safe agricultural products for housewives" by Duong Quang Thanh (the Thang Township Secondary School) won the first prize at the provincial Innovation Contest for Youth and Teenagers. "The biggest goal of the software is connecting farmers, retailers and housewives," shared Duong Quang Thanh.

On average, every year, the district's educational sector has from 40 to 45 products and models winning prizes at the district-level contest, and 8 to 10 products and models winning prizes at the provincial-level competition.

“In the coming time, we will enhance communication and dissemination, and encourage students to explore, research, and create scientific and technological products in many fields. On the other hand, we will advise the district People's Committee to consider increasing rewards for models and products winning high prizes, contributing to arousing the passion and spreading scientific and technological creativity in the sector,” said Nguyen Van Thao.
