Bridges of love for poor patients

(BGO) - Currently, a number of hospitals in Bac Giang province are effectively implementing the model of social work groups. Despite not wearing a white blouse and not directly treating the sick, the groups’ members have become bridges that persuade organizations and individuals to help poor patients, thus spreading human values and love right in hospital beds.

At the end of 2015, the Ministry of Health issued Circular No. 43/2015/TT-BYT stipulating tasks and forms of implementing social tasks in hospitals. Besides the task of providing medical examination and treatment, health facilities also have the role of connecting kind-hearted people and mobilizing resources to support disadvantaged patients.

At the Kidney - Urology - Dialysis Department of the Bac Giang provincial General Hospital, many people know about the situation of Vi Van Dinh's family (born in 1966) from Dai Son commune (Son Dong district). He himself had chronic kidney failure and has undergone dialysis since 2016. The family circumstance became more and more difficult when his two sons Vi Van Mao (born in 1987) and Vi Van Hoang (born in 1991) were respectively diagnosed to have the same disease as their father.

So every month, the three come to the hospital for dialysis as directed to maintain health. The expenses, from travel and food to medicine, amount to several millions of dong per month. Grasping his situation, members of the Social Work Division of the hospital met them to find out specific information.

After that, they wrote articles about his family's situation to call for help and posted them on the hospital's website and Facebook page. Since 2019, Dinh's family has received 500,000 VND (21.4 USD) per month from the Van Chien Joint Stock Company to continue fighting the disease. From the mobilized fund, the division has given an amount of money to support this extremely difficult case.

Doctor Ngo Thi Kim Hong, head of the division, said that formerly the Social Work Group, the division was officially established in December 2017. Now it has 14 members who are doctors, nurses and medical workers working in the departments of the hospital.

These days, identifying the hospital as the frontline in the Covid-19 combat, the members of the division are busy, together with their colleagues, effectively screening patients and their family members before medical check-ups, ensuring safety.

Since its establishment, the Social Security Division of the provincial General Hospital has mobilized nearly 200 million VND (8,570 USD) and 800 jackets to support those in need. It has also organised many charitable programmes to help disadvantaged patients and poor children. Its members are also in charge of providing guidance and information on health services, hence facilitating people’s medical examination and treatment.

With the motto of ‘Do not let disadvantaged patients be alone in the fight against diseases”, besides receiving, guiding patients, and seeking funding, the Social Work Team of the provincial Oncology Hospital has coordinated with charity clubs and groups to effectively maintain the models of "Porridge pot of love" and "Meal of love".

Many hospitals are innovative and creative in deploying their activities. Typically, the provincial Mother’s and Children Hospital has often organized art programmes to raise funds for poor children; the Tan Yen district General Hospital has set up a quick response team who are ready to donate blood for emergency...

These activities have contributed significantly to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, and innovating the serving style and attitude of medical staff, towards the satisfaction of patients. In particular, with their dedication and responsibility, members of the social work groups really serve as bridges of love that give more strength to many poor patients, making them optimistic to triumph over the illnesses.
