Banter Blitz Cup: Liem outplays Dutch rival to make semifinals

Vietnamese chess ace Le Quang Liem made light work of Dutch GM Benjamin Bok in the quarterfinals of the Banter Blitz Cup on July 5 to set up a semifinal clash against 18-year-old Kirill Shevchenko.

Liem needed just five games to address Bok’s challenge, drawing the opening game and winning the next four to advance after 47 minutes.

Next up for Liem is a match against Ukrainian Shevchenko on July 7, who stunned second seed Vidit Santosh Gujrathi 5-2 in the quarterfinals.

A semifinal victory will see the Vietnamese star to the title decider and offer him the chance to compete in either the eighth stage of the Champions Chess Tour 2021 (July 31-August 8) or the San Fermin Mundial knockout tournament (July 13-14).

If he wins the Banter Blitz Cup, Liem will get to choose to participate in one of the two aforementioned events.

The US$60,000 San Fermin Mundial event is part of the replacement for this year’s Pamplona bull run festivities, with chess king Magnus Carlsen as the star guest, who has confirmed he will play in the final.

Regarding the US$1.5 million Champions Chess Tour, Liem has played in two stages of the event thus far, with his best performance being a quarterfinal berth at the Chess Classic in late April.

The Banter Blitz Cup 2021 is being played online on In its first version last year (Banter Series 2020), Le Quang Liem advanced to the semifinals but then lost to Wesley So (US). However, the result was enough to secure him a place in the Skilling Open rapid chess tournament – the first stop of the 2021 Champions Chess Tour.
